What I'm wondering is, is it worth playing through the game to take the dark path?

It is, but not if you are heavily good-aligned. That way you'll end up in a Neutral/DS alignment, and you'll need increased amount of Force points to use your Jedi tricks.

Do you get any significant plot changes? Can you revel in being the Dark Lord of the Sith?

Don't think that it's a bad idea at all, but it would open up further possibilities: simply think on demons/devils, devas/fallen devas for example. These would need specific dialogues as well, and that would be truly beyond our scope.
