#406048 Alone in the Dark Review

Posted by whatbrick on 17 July 2008 - 08:54 PM in General Gameplay

I tried playing some of the earlier Alone in the Dark games and decided that they weren't for me when I started to nod off 5 minutes into it, so I just can't find the kindness in my heart to give this one a try. There are far more interesting games for me looming over the horizon and my meager budget only allows the choice of a couple at the moment.

Also, while channel-surfing I inadvertently watched 10 seconds of the movie while both Christian Slater and Tara Reid were on the screen. Add Corey Haim to the mix and I'm sure the Earth would've collapsed in on itself due to the amount of suck involved (start your Tara Reid innuendos.....now). The resulting PTSD that it caused forces me to skip anything remotely similar to the "film."

Still, psychotic episodes aside, it was a good and thorough review and I'm grateful that you took the time to share your thoughts.

Here's another review of the game that adds a bit more to yours, but also has pretty pictures and vulgarity to keep me entertained. :whistling:

#379239 Fiction Contest Prize Art

Posted by whatbrick on 28 February 2008 - 08:57 PM in Layers of Reality

Well, here it is. Working full-time doesn't exactly lend itself well to getting art projects completed but I got lucky and banged out the main portion of it Sunday. Designing and painting four characters in the span of a week wasn't the difficult part...the difficult part was trying to find a good pose that wouldn't show the beans n' frank!   :whistling:

Without further ado:

Also, why is it that a google image search will scar your brain forever with images not fit for a Tiajuana Donkey show when doing seemingly innocent searches for things such as "fruit", but can't conjure up a decent reference pic for things that would have made this a heck of a lot easier to do? Seriously, how hard is it to run across a picture of a woman crying without her throwing a screaming fit in the process? Apparently it's next to impossible for me.

This should be interesting to follow...kind of like watching a movie with the director's commentary turned on.

#366279 Favorite Character

Posted by whatbrick on 15 December 2007 - 08:45 PM in NWN Series

Most of the OC companions grated on my nerves (see the "Least Favorite Character" thread), but there were some that I liked having around such as Sand, Neeshka, Ammon and Shandra (stretching a bit here). I also liked Kana, though I'm not sure why...guess it's always nice to have a submissive Asian woman about. :whistling: After trouncing Torio in the trial (and unleashing any leftover frustration on Lorne) I felt kinda sympathetic towards her and let her live, which usually means I like someone enough. :)

For MotB, Safiya/Kaji were tops as far as companions go. I thought I would outright hate Gann, and I did at the beginning, but he toned his presence down and actually became likeable. Kaelyn was the opposite...she was fairly likeable at the beginning, but her obsession with the damn wall made me want to strangle her as time passed. I'm neutral towards Okku and I never used One of Many.

This was my experience playing through both as a male CN warlock.

#364942 Alternative BG2 NPC Portraits

Posted by whatbrick on 08 December 2007 - 10:48 AM in Layers of Reality

I didn't see anything wrong with the "lightness" of the original Aerie portrait, it just needed some dark areas to make it pop off the screen more. Lack of contrast is something that plagues everyone at one time or another.

Here's an example:

aerie_overpaint.jpg

Two key elements that I paid attention to were to intensify the shadows a bit (under the chin, the hair behind the head, and the eyes) and also to added a bit more specularity to some key spots on the face, such as the chin, cheeks, nose, and lips.

Ignore the whole reshaping of the face thing I did. I lost track of what I was supposed to be doing and went a little overboard.   :whistling:
