It seems that there are several ways to talk to Zernan initially. I haven't solved what happens when you give him the book and Nandin appears at Candlekeep. I did however manage to hit upon the exact conversational path that lead to Zernan stealing the book AND getting 3000 xp AND him disappearing in an ambush just outside BG. When this happens, you can track him down at FAI and Nashkell Inn. I think for the next mod revision you need to check out the initial conversation tree. It doesn't seem to fire properly in all cases.
