Hi,
I decided to start this thread to give a little feedback to the creators of this impressive project.
I am no stranger to the BG series, neither vanilla nor modded. First time I played it was probably ten years ago, and last time was about 5 years ago when Horred's "BP-BGT" was the answer to any BG enthusiast's dreams. Although I enjoyed it immensely I probably spent about one third of the game time debugging the final product, not to mention the countless number of times I had to reinstall everything in a different way just to get a game with a usable dialog.tlk.

My first impression with the BWS was how far the whole integration process has come since then. Installing a mega mod has actually become an enjoyable, though timeconsuming process. The best thing about BWS is how you have managed to include information about every known mod incompatibility, so that the potential gamer no longer have to wade through hundreds of forum pages to find this information. This was the source of most of my countless re-installs five years ago. The setup program itself can probably be made a bit more user friendly, but it's basic design is made up for a hundred times over by it's great functionality.

I had very few problems using the program. I only had two griefs with it overall. First of there are way to many mods to chose from and too little information to make an informed decision about mods that don't come recommended (green). It would probably be helpful to sort them under different thematic categories, like a NPC category (would probably shorten the list about 1/4) or a Shops and items category. Another immensely useful feature would be to mark all mods that are unbalanced, like Exnem's Vault. My second grief came when I lost my internet connection during mod download. As I understood it the BWS wanted to skip the not downloaded mods and to go on installing the rest. Naturally I didn't want this, so I canceled the setup and started over again. I am not certain that this was the right thing to do, but with no alternative information at the time I thought it best. So maybe there could be some alternative instructions about this scenario (forgive me if there are and I have missed them) or make the program ask if you want to try downloading again.

Although I can see that BWS has taken a huge step towards making a bug free mega mod I fully expect to run into bugs and oddities during my play through. I intend to report any bugs or oddities in the third post of this topic (second will be Weidu Log) and see if I can use my debugging experience to shed some light on them. Feedback is greatly appreciated and will probably be needed.

Bugs and oddities...

1. Mutamin (Mutami.cre), Gnome with Basilisk pets, was carrying some "Bracers of defense AC 8" (brac01.itm) which were usable by Kensai.
Near infinity reveals that the same goes for brac02, brac03, brac12, brac13, brac14, brac15 and brac16. (All the AC Bracers In other words)

"10th" has revealed that this is due to "Item revisions v2" and thus isn't a bug.
Discussion here.

2. The description of the different levels of proficiency on the character creation and level up screen are wrong. The numbers listed are from vanilla BG2, which obviously aren't valid in my game. Should be changeable with a little dialog.tlk editing.
Hoppy on the case.

3. Shouldn't the door of "Thunder Hammer Smithy" in Beregost close at night?

Suggested this be changed in BGT v1.08.

4. I ran into an ogre called "Daddy" (ntogreda.cre) in a house in Beregost (ar6745.are). This ogre carried some "gauntlets of Ogre power" and a "Flame of the north +2" two-handed sword. These items are obviously over-powered in an area of the game where I have yet to lay my hands on my first +1 weapon.
One of many balance issues with Ntotsc.

5. Talanthyr sells a set of "Elven chainmail +2" (echan01.itm) that is usable by everyone (except druids). This seems too overpowered for BG1, plus too many classes are able to use it compared to other elven chainmail in the game (end of bg2). This comes from "The Vault" mod.

Erebusant is on it.

6. Quite a lot of the Gnolls (gnlcap01.cre, gneli.cre and gnlwar01.cre), summoned by the BGSpawn mod (though not included with this mod), are carrying up to lvl 8 magic scrolls. These creatures are assigned level 4 random treasure (rndtre04.itm) which apparently is a bit much.
(The same kind of problem with Hobcap01.cre and HOBARC01.cre)

Solution: Install "Aurora's Shoes v2" or above!

7. Gavin NPC mod adds an encounter to a house in Beregost. Two of the characters the party encounters carries some unbalanced treasure, compared to the low level of difficulty and early availability of these, most notably a "Full Plate Mail" (b!bertra.cre) and a "Robe of the evil archmagi" (b!valer.cre)
Asked berelinde to put a lock on the door in the next version.

8. Keiria Silverstring (dsotsc mod) has godlike stats. 16.33 average is way higher than any other npc. (Imoen used to be highest, with 14.5)

9. Deceiver's Blade (dsswd07.itm), found in the ship in north sword coast (ar9200), and added by Dsotsc if I'm not mistaken, is HIGHLY unbalanced. I mean, a +5 longsword just lying about in BG1... So much for PnP realism. Give this to Keiria and the game soon stops being fun.

10. Near infinity lists ardem.are as corrupt with 24 errors (Domains of Dread mod), arpsq2.are with 9 errors (PlanarSphereMod), psfurn.dlg with 4 errors (PlanarSphereMod), 8 Bonehill areas with 1 single error, 2 "Check the bodies" .wed's with three errors each (CB3661.WED and CB3664.WED) and 2 errors with "potselca.sto" (Region Of Terror). Link1

11. "A Talking chicken" quest is not erased from the journal when Melicamp is successfully transformed back into a human.
Fixed in BGT1.08!

12. lamalha's party doesn't spawn outside the exit of the Nashkel Mines. Only Elka and Natalka from Ntotsc do (which carry unbalanced treasure).
This is an incompatibility between ScS and Ntotsc. Erebusant on the case.

13. For some reason Drakar (the second party of assassins that is moved by ScS) appears, without his party, while I am inside the friendly arms in. He just stands about doing nothing.
This appears to be because ScS codes the encounter in such a way that it's quite easy to interrupt the script before all creatures is summoned. Discussion here...

14. Black Talon Elites (btelite.cre) has a lot of magical arrows which they don't use.
This is another Ntotsc balance problem.

15. The gauntlets of Power attacks (brac10.itm), carried by meilum in the firewine bridge area, makes the wielder do insane amounts of damage with missile weapons.
This is a "Item revisions" bug. Fixed with the latest hotfix.

16. The two-handed sword "Valiant" (sw2val.itm), dropped by "khark" and added by "The vault" mod, has no proficiency flag.
Link.

17. Ar53pb.are, added by ntotsc, has it's only exit badly bordered, making the area impossible to exit.
Link.

18. The "Chainmail of the Firewine" (ntchan06.itm) should have the same restrictions as other elven chainmail and is hugely unbalanced to boot.
Ntotsc again. Link.

19. Ran into a stutter-bug. In my case the problem started when I entered "Gorion's rest" from "high hedge" in chapter 5.

The problem was two blocks of potentially looping script. Fixed in BGT1.08!

20. Armand the archdruid (amaran.cre) has a lot (too much) of unbalanced loot.

21. The "arch druid" in cloackwood4 (dsarchdrd) has no history and a lot of unbalanced loot.
Dsotsc balance issue.

22. Arrows of dispelling (arow07.itm) should behave like the spell "dispel". It shouldn't dispel all magic protection indiscriminately.
Discussion.

23. Aldeth's store (aldeth.sto), added by BGTNEJ, has items that needs bug fixing and balancing.

24. Shouldn't the flaming fist officers that show up when you steal something follow you out to the street (in order to prevent exploitation)...

25. Invisible stalkers (stalke.cre) doesn't give the party any xp when killed.
This is done by both BGfixpack and SR to prevent spell exploitation. Fixed in SRv3.

26. The "Vault Vampire" (jc_vam.cre) has a permanent level drain effect on his main weapon (jc_vam1.itm). More precisely it has a "change level" and "xp bonus" effect, where it should have a "level drain" effect. This effectively makes any level drain he inflicts irreversible.

No bug and no oddity. You've got Item Revisions installed, that's all.

Thanks for clarifying.
I'm not convinced that Kensai should be able to wear bracers though.

@OneEyedPhoenix: If you want to give us a list what's good and what's not, feel free to do so.
I must admit that I did not install a game in the last 2 years or so, so I can't say anything else than "select green", hope they did not keep mods and hope that someone fixes those big bastards. ;)

If you want to improve that, send us some useful "compressed" data. We have taken the info from the BiG World Project Guide. If you want more, send us more (that's to all readers). -- Oh, you just remembered me to create a button to open the link to the homepage of the mod. That data already exists and just needs to be made available. :)
And we are heading towards making components and subcomponents selectable. So you will see all the names of the components like you see them through WeiDU. That will be additional data that will make the selection easier.

With the setup itself you mean the installpack/batch that comes in a cmd-session?
You can add/mark/remove mods by selecting a category using the BWS. Or what do you mean exactly?

After the BWS finished downloading what's available, it says
Some files cannot be downloaded with the "BiG World Setup".
Do you want to open the links in your default-browser to try it yourself?
Enter [y]es or [n]o.

That will open the download-link in your browser and you can save it to the download-folder. So this is a manual but guided download. Adding a possible second loop as a third option would be possible.
And
THINK! - It's not illegal.

I only used the BWS, I didn't care to manually edit the installpack.
I meant the huge list of mods that comes up after you have selected version (tactical in my case). I meant that these could be added up into more organized sub categories instead of a long list from mod A to mod Z.

That's right, when auto install failed I was given the choice of manually downloading some 40 mods, which, for obvious reasons, I didn't care to do. Maybe another chance to auto-download or a feature that remembers your mod-selection if you quit setup.

About text bulks I might do just that. The first place I have noticed that needs a little change is the text about the different levels of weapon proficiency (on the create character or level up screen). The bonuses listed are the standard BG2 numbers, which obviously aren't valid in my game. Is this text editable or hard-coded?

That's not A-Z. You got chapters.
And the chapters are BG1 NPCs, BG2 NPCs, BG1 Items, BG2 Quests, ... you just did not recognize that. You would have seen if you tried the Add/mark/remove-items in the (fake) menu. ;)

It remembers it, so you have the chance to start from there. You could have edited one ini-entry to do what you wanted. If you start again, you are in the folder-selection once again, go to the selection-screen and in the menu (again), there is one to reload your last selection.

The menu:
In the options-menu, there are several useful functions. E.g. you want to take a break from selecting your mods, you can save your current selection.
After you have taken a nap, you can restore the settings and continue.
You can also share your selection with others by the import/export-function.
With the other menu-items you can mark, add and remove all mods of a category with one single click.

It's basically all in the help-text that you may have read - and did not understand it right, or we need to fix that a little bit... or you not read it at all.

To the download-stuff : I don't know if there are so many guys that want to start and be asked if they want to all the stuff they did once again, so I think we'll go with the auto-download (in the version XYZ).

:ermm: You meant that the text-update you'd like to have are in game, not the text about the mods in the BWS-selection-screen, right? If you did, I can't help you.

True I guess, though it was not initially apparent to me. (Fake menu?)
I guess my point is that it can still become more organized and easy to use.

Aha, I didn't find this. I had to select all the mods I wanted again, from scratch.

The menu:
In the options-menu, there are several useful functions. E.g. you want to take a break from selecting your mods, you can save your current selection.
After you have taken a nap, you can restore the settings and continue.

So you can in fact deselect all mods of the BG1 NPCs category, or are you referring to the wider categories like "tactical" or "recommended"?
Sounds like I have missed an entire menu. Maybe make it more obvious...?
I read most of the help text on the right side of the window but I'll admit that it is possible I missed some information.

To the download-stuff : I don't know if there are so many guys that want to start and be asked if they want to all the stuff they did once again, so I think we'll go with the auto-download (in the version XYZ).

Maybe a cut-off point? like "if: auto failed downloads > 10, Then: ask if user would like to try again". I realize that most people probably wouldn't lose their internet connection during download, but manually downloading 30+ mods are a bit of a hassle for the unfortunate ones that do.

:ermm: You meant that the text-update you'd like to have are in game, not the text about the mods in the BWS-selection-screen, right? If you did, I can't help you.

Aha, you meant mod descriptive texts for the mod selection menu of BWS? I'm more concerned about in-game right now, but I'll keep it in mind when/if I run into a mod I would like to comment.

Obviously these are my own subjective observations about BWS and not meant as dogmatic statements. I, like everybody else, am subject to human error.

I guess my point is that it can still become more organized and easy to use.

Well, it's just a technical term. Menus appear right under the window-titelbar. My menu appear under the BWS-picture-banner. Well, you are vague here. Leomar wanted a menu that has the same order as the chapters in the PDF-Guide and the batch from the installpack. And the PDF is sorted, just have a look at the index. So BWS is ordered as well. ;)

What do you mean with "easy to use"? It's a treeview and I can't sort that. I'd have to build it anew. That would be not that great problem -- well, maybe, since the conflicts and dependencies are using this system. I would not put it as a first on the todo-list though, but you have do say what you want if we should consider it. ;)

Are we talking about the same thing? After I chose a "tactical" installation in BWS I got a list of mods to chose from. I did not see much of a tree-structure.

Here is the list you can choose from:

--=ALL
00=REQUIREMENTS
01=CORRECTIONS
02=IMPROVEMENTS
03=NEVER ENDING JOURNEY (NEJ)
04=THE BIG BG2 MODS
05=BGT TRILOGY

12=BG2 TACTICAL ENCOUNTERS
13=BG2 STORES AND ITEMS
14=BG2 NPC MODS
15=BG2 ONE-DAY NPCS
16=BG2 NPC-RELATED MODS
17=BG2 MORE NPC-MODS
18=MINI-MODS
19=BG2 RULES, TWEAKS AND SPELLS
20=ASCENSION-RELATED MODS
21=KELSEY/SOLAUFEIN RELATED NPC MODS
22=HLA-TABLES CHANGING MODS
23=POST-BP TWEAKS
24=GRAPHIC, PORTRAIT AND SOUND MODS
25=INSTALLATION OF KITS
26=CLOSER INSTALLATION
27=MULTI-INSTALL-TOOL
You can also restrict these selections to Normal/Expert and so on in the window that comes right after you select the folders. I think that is exactly what you have asked for. :cheers:

This definitely would have helped if I had found it. Maybe these categories could be integrated into the list? Obviously I have no idea about the extent of work it would take to do this. All I am saying is that such a categorical tree might be more easily navigated and used than the current list.

I attached to pictures of the select-screen and the menu.

And nope, it will take some time until you can have a BWS like this.
In fact, in this screenshot I use data of a version that I made a year ago... with the data of V6. :D

-The data in the ini-files itself is not sorted well
-You can't handle all that new things that are included now.
(You can see this when looking at the color of the mods lines: they are all gray.)
-The selection AI is bugged.
-There is no code for installing. Well, there is, but it only worked with the batch-files used in BWP v6. But it was really stupid.
-It does not handle multiple choices.

And I that's a bunch of work to chew on. :D

And concerning the chapter-selection: I can't agree with that.
People may want NPCs but no 1 Day NPCs.
Or can't stand the Ascension-stuff since it's too tactical.
Or don't want IWD in BG2.
You need this fine differences.

And you still have not said how you'd do that. ;)

Adding a line for chapters in the Treeview would be possible.

I can see there are clear differences between your setup and mine:

BWS.JPG

As you can see there is no tree-structure in my version.

I understand now how the category selection works. I missed it the first three times through though. I guess there was too little emphasis on this option in the right window for me to notice. This is obviously my own fault but maybe it could be made even more explicit?
This could probably be most easily done by changing this part of the text:

To something like this:

The Menus:

Options: Here you will find several useful functions to help you handle the mod selection. You can save your current selection of mods for later, reload a previously made selection, export your selection list for somebody else to use or import the list of somebody else. The Show components option collapses the selection tree.

Add: Chose an entire category of mods to add to your selection at the same time.

Remove: Remove an entire category of mods from your selection at the same time.

Mark: Color all mods of a selected category red in the selection list.

I didn't mean you should eliminate the possibility of individually selecting mods, but maybe there could be a check box for a whole category (like BG1 NPC mods) in the bottom of the tree. This way you could easily select/deselect a whole group of mods and then fine tune your selection further up the tree afterward.

That is a tree. As long as you see + and - in front of an item, it's a tree. :D

We thought it was quite obvious what add / remove / mark do, but since it's easy to do, it may be added. And the show tree has no meaning now, since just tells you what will be possible in the future (with a hand full of exceptions). So we did not describe it at all.

We can talk about the comfort-things after we managed to get the main job done. ;)

I ran into an ogre called "Daddy" (ntogreda.cre), who carries some "gauntlets of Ogre power" and a "Flame of the north +2" two-handed sword, in a house in Beregost (ar6745). These items are obviously over-powered in an area of the game where I have yet to lay my hands on my first +1 weapon.

Edit: In the second floor (ar6746) I also encountered "Mommy" (ntogremu.cre) who carried some "Boots of the forgotten ones" (+2 lv1, +2 lv2 and +1 lv3 cleric spells) and a "Serpent Shaft +3" (1d6 poison dmg).

The treasures these two have are a bit ridiculous. Especially since they both were push-overs.
Further research revealed that these two are part of NTotSC. Something for the BP-balancer?

If you want to, you can maintain the mod from now on, since the author nowadays has less time for gaming to have more time for kids and family. He said he would be willing to guide interested coders, but also stated there's no way he will have time to spare soon. ;)

Should be a simple enough matter to edit out these items from the mod. I have already done so in my own game.
I have attached the relevant, balanced, .cre files.
