Right, well, I've given up. I've tried to install BWS various times this week, and each time has failed, and mostly each time it's failed because of Baldur's Gate Trilogy, (although other problems have occurred). Every time I get to installing Baldur's Gate Trilogy, I get this error. Here's the debug file:

What do I need to do to fix this, good people of Spellhold Studios? I seem to be completely unable to no matter how many times I reinstall and do custom/full installations...I see that BGcleric.chr is missing, but no such file exists in my BG1 setup, (as far as I am aware), and BGT seems to be missing its uninstall info as well(?). Soooo, yeah. Help! :P

(edit) P.S.: Is it normal to have your mods that are extracted in your BG2 folder to also be extracted in your BG1 folder?

To answer the later, no. You need to have a clean BG1+TotSC patched to (v1.3.)5512 version, a full install of those.
But the error would indicate to be caused by a false extraction of the BGT-WeiDU archive, or that is what I suspect.

BGT fails if there's no characters/ directory (which could be missing if you used the Multi Install Tool). It should create it "just in case".

Italian users: help test the Stivan NPC!

If possible, send diffs, translations and other contributions using Git.

Yeah, somebody didn't read the instructions:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Black Isle\Baldur's Gate
C:\Program Files (x86)\Black Isle\Baldurs Gate II\

These should be something like

C:\Games\Baldur's Gate
C:\Games\BGII - SoA\

Or the like... the "BGII - SoA" is really important, because the mods wish to have that...

@Jarno Mikkola #1: I definitely have a full install of both, (BG2 = install type 3, manually made sure every data from each disk was there in my directory, BG1 = custom with everything selected), and unless the actual download location that the BWS is corrupted, can't be that either as I've redownloaded everything multiple times now, (including the BWS setup itself). I've wiped both my BG1 and BG2 install every time it's failed and started clean by installing from CDs, so I'm not sure what's up.
@thebigg: Uh, which directory? BG1 or BG2? ...let me try something. (go down)
@Jarno Mikkola & Mike1072 #2: Yeah, I know that part. Unfortunately for that, I already tried that in one of my various reinstalls, (#4 or #5, I think?), and since my other Black Isle games were already in Program Files, I just figured that probably wasn't it and was fine. I guess I'll try that again if you guys run out of suggestions, (or could I just manually move/rename the directories before installation and then move them back after?)

Anyways, I did what thebigg said and added a 'characters' fold to my BG1 directory, and that fixed the BGcleric.chr error, but now I have a different one.

Here's what the DOS window says:

P.S. Anyone know why you can't install Baldur's Gate 2 with an apostrophe in the directory name, but you can with Baldur's Gate 1? Drives me crazy!

Like Mike and Jarno said earlier, don't install your games in the default C:\Program Files\[...] directory.

Once that is settled, try this:

When it gets to BGT, the install process uses the default installation path of the game instead of searching for the actual location of the game. You need to correct the path to where BG1 is installed.

Open the install.bat file in your BGII-SoA folder with Notepad and search for the following block of lines:

%IFES%BGT%S%BGT%L%0 --force-install 0 --args-list sp "C:\Program Files (86)\Black Isle\Baldur's Gate" | %M%
%IFGS%BGT%S%BGT%L%4 --force-install 0 --args-list sp "C:\Program Files (86)\Black Isle\Baldur's Gate" | %M%
%IFHS%BGT%S%BGT%L%2 --force-install 0 --args-list sp "C:\Program Files (86)\Black Isle\Baldur's Gate" | %M%
%IFRS%BGT%S%BGT%L%8 --force-install 0 --args-list sp "C:\Program Files (86)\Black Isle\Baldur's Gate" | %M%

Just change the path to where your Baldur's Gate 1 game actually is.

Hope this will be enough.

Open the install.bat file in your BGII-SoA folder with Notepad and search for the following block of lines:

Or he could just run the BWS and let it set the folder...

But, uh, I didn't change the default path of BG1 - only BG2. Baldur's Gate is still just in C:\Program Files (x86)\Black Isle\Baldur's Gate. I changed the .bat file to have an (x86), (as for whatever reason, it wasn't there). I still fail at the same error, though. Never had any problems with BGT installing before, (which I've done a dozen times), so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

I think I'm going to try and start from scratch again, except no changing directory names, and putting them outside the Program Files directory...Thanks for the help, guys.

Unless there's been an update taking care of that, the BWS doesn't change the default path to extract the Baldur's Gate 1 data it needs.

I used to have this problem.

Both Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 need to be installed elsewhere than in the C:\Program Files (x86)\ directory if you're using either Windows Vista of Windows 7. Otherwise there will be install problems.

Then, manually change the path to BG1 in the install.bat, created by BWS when you run it the first time.

Yes I did.

This directory problem isn't about the entire BWP installation. It's a part of the BGT install segment, and that stucks the whole process when it gets there. That's why it needs to be changed manually.

Doing this is actually a standard directive for Vista and Windows 7 users. Here's an excerpt from the BiG World installpack read me:

How to get the right BG1 directory entries
------------------------------------------
The preset BG1 directory is already preset with this line:

%IFES%BGT%S%BGT%L%0 --force-install 0 --args-list sp "C:\Program Files\Black Isle\Baldur's Gate" | %M%

If you had installed BG1 at another place, the easiest way to change this is to copy your actual BG1 path and paste it into the install.bat and then to save the file.

Is it, and how old is that info ? After all, I have had a Vista and now have a W 7 on my computer, so I should know... so if you use the BWS, you don't have to alter the BGT dir, cause the BWS handles that itself... you can put - to the BG1 dir if you don't intent to install BGT...
Yes, if you use the BWP with the BiG World Install.bat without using the BWS, you need to do this cause the BWS doesn't replace the file that's used to insert the folder, but as it is, with the BWS, you don't need to.

Well some of us DO need to. I needed to. This guy seems to need to. And others in other threads did as well. Problem solved everytime.

You don't need it? Awesome. But many of us do.

And that info was from the last version of the installpack, just before it got updated about 2 days ago. (And I haven't checked if it's still there, yet.)

EDIT: Yup, still up to date according the current 9.8 installpack. See for yourself in the joint document...

Well some of us DO need to. I needed to.

OK, so the functionality changed sometime lately, still the best thing to do is to install the BG1 to a directory you know everything about... in Vista and Win7 it's any where else than the Program Files sub-folders, and so you can then copy the directory name from the window to the line when the question comes... there is no need to edit the BiG World Install.bat at all...

That's exactly what I did, but I still needed to change that part manually. It just ignores the path change made during the setup process for some reason. Once the setup is done and the install.bat is created, I checked it out and saw that I had to change the path manually anyway. Since I've repeated the install process several times for various reasons and to settle other issues, I had to do this every time, so I'm pretty sure that in my case, just changing the path when prompted to isn't enough to solve the problem.

A lot of people had this problem, prior to my venture a few weeks ago, and since. That's why it's included in the installation readme in the special cases section (the readme is for how to make changes in the .bat file once the setup is complete, but before the install, after all).

Once the OP changes the directory folder for all of his BG game, he'll see if he still needs to do this step or not (hopefully not).

Just out of curiosity:

Which line is in your BiG WOrld Setup\Logs\BiG World Debug.txt:

The "BiG World Setup" was not able to adjust the selected "Baldur's Gate" path for the BGT installation or the adjustments for a BG2 only installation in the "BiG World Install.bat".
The defaults will be used.

The "BiG World Setup" has adjusted the selected "Baldur's Gate" path for the BGT installation or the adjustments for a BG2 only installation.
The original "BiG World Install.bat" has been saved with the suffix .bak.

Is there a
cd /D "$dosBG2Dir"
at the top of the BiG World Install.bat?

I'd also like to add the I don't have or intend to buy/install vista/7, so I can't/won't test installations with that OS.
THINK! - It's not illegal.

Just searching for the term "Baldur's" in my BG2 directory gives no results, and looking manually, I see no such file, (unless you count Big World Setup\Big World Setup\Logs\Bak-201102272129\Big World Debug.txt, which still doesn't have anything like that in it).

Searching for BG2Dir gives up no results in the BiG World Install.bat, and I see no such thing at the top.

I also forgot to mention I'm using beta, (if that somehow wasn't clear already).

The funny thing with this whole situation is that I had Baldur's Gate 1/2 installed in Program Files (x86)\Black Isle on this exact system with BWS/BGT installed just fine with no problems ever previously. It's really quite puzzling to me.

@Jarno Mikkola: Yes, I set the directory there correctly, (you can't continue in the setup until you do - I've tried setting it to something besides their proper paths, (such as BG1 -> BG2, or just empty), and it doesn't work).

Good news: I found out the problem. Baldur's Gate Trilogy/BWS automatically assume that all your data files are in CDx\data and movie files in CDx\movies, which basically comes down to this in the baldur.ini:

[Alias]
HD0:=C:\Program Files (x86)\Black Isle\Baldurs Gate II\
CD1:=C:\Program Files (x86)\Black Isle\Baldurs Gate II\CD1
CD2:=C:\Program Files (x86)\Black Isle\Baldurs Gate II\CD2
CD3:=C:\Program Files (x86)\Black Isle\Baldurs Gate II\CD3
CD4:=C:\Program Files (x86)\Black Isle\Baldurs Gate II\CD4
CD5:=C:\Program Files (x86)\Black Isle\Baldurs Gate II\CD5

or something like that. However, I move the CD-data files into the default data directory within Baldur's Gate 2, (black isle\baldur's gate ii\data), and likewise for the cd-movies, (black isle\baldur's gate ii\movies). This is to make the directory smaller, (as there are a few overwrites, as well as keeping the directory clean.) I, of course, change the baldur.ini to reflect this change:

[Alias]
HD0:=C:\Program Files (x86)\Black Isle\Baldurs Gate II\
CD1:=C:\Program Files (x86)\Black Isle\Baldurs Gate II\
CD2:=C:\Program Files (x86)\Black Isle\Baldurs Gate II\
CD3:=C:\Program Files (x86)\Black Isle\Baldurs Gate II\
CD4:=C:\Program Files (x86)\Black Isle\Baldurs Gate II\
CD5:=C:\Program Files (x86)\Black Isle\Baldurs Gate II\

...but as I said, BWS/BGT apparently doesn't take this into consideration when looking for the files. So everything is working again.
