And Cal, it's not an Elder Scrolls game unless I fall through the floor into the Void. OH BETHESDA

I spent way too much time getting stuck in the walls in Daggerfall and falling through multi-level dungeons, although I happily skipped away, unharmed, from monsters that suffered the same fate. :)

I'm a little sceptical regarding the timeline it will be set in as I've read that they may be using the premise of a Dragon Break. Basically having a situation where Akatosh has realigned time and space. I suppose this gives them flexibility with the lore but it could be messy. (Of course I could also be completely wrong. :))

Oh yeah, it wouldn't be Bethesda if you didn't fall through the scenery at least once! (I can't say it happens a lot to me, but it always happens)

I just have this amazing idea of like... Akatosh sitting there, getting bored, and just going "YOU KNOW WHAT, I'M TIRED OF THIS TIMELINE. LET'S GO ALL X-MEN ON THIS BIDNISS" and BAM. Alternate timeline.

But, that also worries me because Bethesda could use this as an excuse whenever they don't want to confine themselves to canon. "Oh, you guys are pissed because So-and-So never did this big epic game-changing thing? LOL DOVAH EX MACHINA GUISE"

"Akatosh reset time" is about to be the new "A wizard did it". I mean, Akatosh is already responsible for the Warp in the West...

We'll see how they work with what they have, but I figure the second era has enough "blank spaces" in it for them to fill in with whatever event that could've been lost to history afterwards.
I've been listening to the interview I posted this morning, and I heard the words "Daggerfall Covenant", "Aldermi Dominion" and Ebonheart Pact" as the three factions.
The "Ebonheart Pact" includes Nords and Dunmer teaming up because they're tired of being invaded, and approaching the Argonians. The Daggerfall Covenant (Bretons, Orcs and Redguards) is "all about economics, they open trade routes". The Aldermi Dominion has seen a lot of instability, and they're blaming men instead of Mer, and they form an alliance with the Khajiit (not sure why the Khajiit would ally with Mer, but that's what he said), Bosmer and Altmer. Not sure where that leaves the Imperials. The key territory being disputed is Cyrodiil, though.

The Game Informer article (which is fantastic) mentions "necromancy-corrupted Imperials." Paraphrasing here, it says the Imperial noble family Tharn forged a pact with Mannimarco, but Mannimarco secretly serves Molag Bal. Who is the main bad guy. So it seems the undead/corrupted Imperials are enemies of all factions.

There's so much good stuff in this article, but a few things I really like are:

If you help someone kill a monster, even if you're not grouped together, everyone gets full experience, loot, and quest credit.

Zenimax Online confirmed the existence of the Thieves Guild (and the Dark Brotherhood) in the Elder Scrolls Online...

...you may not have a quest to clear out the undead-infested barrow you stumble across in your travels, but perhaps the shade you free by killing the necromancer at the bottom rewards you for your trouble.

They also talk a lot about the combat and tactics, stuff I don't usually find all that interesting, but the direction they're going sounds pretty good in theory. Definitely excited to see where they end up come next year.

Oh heck yes, Daggerfall Covenant 4 lyfe. Gonna take out the Tharns before Jager can be born, yeeeeeah. B)

I'm seriously just going to go out of my way to see how much canon I can break before I'm through. Eliminate the Tharn family before Jager can be born and make "Arena" happen? Kill off Mannimarco an Era too early? YES.

THE WIKI GOT UPDATED WITH INFO :D

The game is set in the Second Era, in the Interregnum.
The Interregnum is the period of time between the death of Savirien-Chorak, the last Akaviri Potentate, and the rise of Tiber Septim. Essentially, every province is ruling itself and there is no Emperor.

Cyrodiil is ravished by war, and the Imperials aren't doing so well.
Akavir is still trying to get all the power they lost with the death of Savirien-Chorak back. Everyone wants Cyrodiil because it's the traditional seat of power. Plus, we have the Daedra all over it because Molag Bal is kind of obsessive about Cyrodiil (read further to see how crazy)

The Tharn family has made a pact with the King of Worms, who has agreed to supplement the Imperial's forces by resurrecting their soldiers. Secretly, Mannimarco is conspiring with Molag Bal, the Daedric Prince of Corruption and Slavery, to take over Mundus.
The Tharn family has a crap history with "NOT doing things that will break time-space in Mundus", so this isn't surprising. This also gives us our basic plot.

Molag Bal is harvesting souls of mortals, and the player is an adventurer whose soul has been taken, allowing them to constantly return to life. He's also sent "Dark Anchors" into Tamriel, which drag Mundus into Coldharbour. The Fighters Guild have taken it upon themselves to remove them.
Respawns are dealt with in a story-supported manner, which is nice. HOLY CRAP WE'RE THE ELDER SCROLLS NAMELESS ONE. Also, the Fighter's Guild doing this is pretty big news, because the guilds are relatively new. They were just chartered this Era.
Coldharbour is Molag Bal's Oblivion plane, which looks exactly like Nirn, but the ground is made of sludge, the sky is on fire, and the air is freezing cold. Also contains a replica of the Imperial Palace, but it's covered in blood and full of corpses. FUN TIMES.

Three major groups have formed:
The Aldmeri Dominion, consisting of Altmer, Bosmer, and Khajiit, control Alinor, Elsweyr, and Valenwood.
The Daggerfall Covenant, consisting of Orcs, Bretons, and Redguards, control High Rock and Hammerfell.
The Ebonheart Pact, consisting of Dunmer, Argonians, and Nords, control Skyrim, Morrowind, and Black Marsh.

This is as Eleima posted as well. BTW, Alinor = Summurset Isle.
So we've got the three factions who actually straight-up RULE the different provinces. This is going to make things interesting, as we have yet to have played an Elder Scrolls game where the provinces are this fractured AND we get to see actual consequences from an ununited Tamriel.

Time-travel will be featured in the game. In one example, the player puts on some old armor and is put in the owner's role, participating in a battle of long ago.
Akatosh did it. I'm intrigued, but a little worried. This could go really overboard.

Undead werewolves will be featured in the game.
I... what? Undead werewolves? Freaking seriously? Undead werewolves.

A werewolf named Faolchu has amassed a werewolf army and has taken over Camlorn, High Rock.
Camlarn is located roughly north-northeast of Daggerfall. You can see it here:
Posted Image

The Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, Fighters and Mages Guilds are in the game.
Fighter's Guild and Mage's Guild were pretty much guaranteed for the game, canonically. Having the Thieves Guild is cool, and the Dark Brotherhood starting up now only makes sense after how EPIC MEGA FAIL the Morag Tong were in assassinating the last Potentate (who literally, as an assassin, thinks it's a great idea to just write the name of their assassin's guild on the walls of the murder scene where you just killed the leader of an entire country, seriously?)

There will at some point be a battle for the Imperial City which is overrun by Daedra, deciding who will rule Tamriel.
MOLAG BAL FOR EMPEROR.

The landscape of Cyrodiil is similar to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, contradicting established lore somewhat.
Being 1000 years in the past and during the Interregnum, a lot of stuff should look different in Cyrodiil. Nibenay and Colovia split apart, highways and villages and farms are in ruins, there's roaving bands of bandits everywhere, every few weeks or so, some d-bag tries to claim the Imperial Throne and gets smacked down by the Imperial Guard... pretty much everything is in a state of pure epic chaos and it's incredibly unsafe to be just wandering the countrysides of Cyrodiil. But, if the landscape is similar to how it was in "Oblivion", then it kind of nerfs the established lore as to how really really crappy everything is with no Emperor and no provisions made for someone to take the throne.

Yeah I put a link to it in (IGN) in the news section for people who want to bookmark it and check it for news and updates...

Anyways...I am kinda bummed that my go to race (Imperial) is the only non playable one...However I realize due to the premise of the game that it makes sense. No idea what I should roll now if I play it...Bosmer - Breton or Redguard though seem likely candidates for me...

Isilven, your post is so neat and pretty, I've half a mind to move it to the news thread (even though you already posted the link, Vicen).

Vicen, I guess it really depends on your playstyle. Not to mention that we've very little information on the gameplay to this date, so we don't know if our habits will still apply. I'm willing to bet that there won't be any major overhaul, though and that Redguards will make formidable warriors, Khajiit will make good rogues, the Bretons and Altmer will make formidable spellcasters, and so on and so forth.

Isilven, I'm willing to overlook that little geographical glitch with the landscape, I think. The more I hear about this, the more excited I get...

DORP, I FAIL. Sorry Vicen :( I jumped the crap outta that gun, sorry.

I was a hardcore High Elf 4lyfe player back in the days of Daggerfall (because having immunity to paralysis as an innate racial ability, then adding on Critical Weakness to paralysis was HILARIOUS and an excellent way to give myself General Spell Absorption). I really didn't start branching out to new races until Morrowind came out. I played a Dunmer in Morrowind, played a Bosmer in Oblivion, and played a Nord in Skyrim (only reason I didn't play an Imperial in Oblivion is because they looked even MORE like potatoes with faces somehow). I'm probably going to stick to a Breton because my real love affair started with "Daggerfall" and I'd kill to have a character from there.

If you'd like, I don't mind! :D Just make sure Vicen's link gets pointed out for people like me who totally missed it.

I doubt there'll be an overhaul either. Changing the landscape is one thing, completely re-doing the basic "this race is good at this" mechanics would be a stupidly huge undertaking.

I... am not too sure on that myself. I mean, if they really push across the chaos factor, I'll look past it. I'm hoping they do a good enough job really showing everyone how much of a hellhole Tamriel has become without focused leadership that we don't NEED to have Cyrodiil be a flaming wrecked wasteland.

Huh, that's funny. I played Breton, Altmer, Dunmer and Redguard in Oblivion. I played a Redguard in Morrowind (not sure what my reasoning was there, think I just wanted to play a tank). For the life of me, I can't remember what I played in Daggerfall, probably a Breton. Breton, and now Khajiit in Skyrim. And yeah, the characters were ugly, but even the developers are willing to admit that.

I'm not sure what you mean. According the the UESP wiki on Cyrodiil, the province was in a state of chaos and ruin, Nibenay and Colovia had split, and towns, farms, even highways had been razed to the ground, put to the torch or otherwise ruined. It can't be that hard to replace the towns and farmlands of Oblivion with smoking ruins. If anything, it plays right into their "chaos everywhere, Interregnum, territories in dispute" premise.

I wonder if we're ever going to get a game that DOESN'T have Cyrodiil in smoking ruins. Yeah, Oblivion at first, but once those gates got going, it was all over.

I love the latest news update that Bethesda gave us. YOU MEAN THE ALDMERI DOMINION ARE HUGE D-BAGS? W-WHAT? NO WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY.

Of COURSE they're the butt-trunchon-iest of the three groups, they're the Aldmeri Dominion. I mean, they established that in Skyrim already: they are d-bags and have been d-bags since they first banded together in the Second Era. They're like Caesar's Legion.

Absolutely, they're the more aggressive of the three. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if they were still just as popular as the other two.

Speaking of popularity, that made me wonder. What if there's no balance between the factions? Say 500 people join the Ebonheart Pact, 900 join the Daggerfall Convenant, and only 100 in the Aldmeri Dominion? What that be a problem for them, or does the game balance out nonetheless? Not sure if I'm making much sense.

They'll balance them out with NPCs, I guess. I mean, I'm guessing that's how they did it for the Alliance vs. Horde in "World of Warcraft". I'm also assuming that because of the way they set up the countries that are in each faction, it'll balance it out. Though, the Aldmeri Dominion seems very magic/rogue oriented while the Daggerfall Covenant seems very tank-oriented.The Ebonheart Pact is really the only one that seems fully balanced out of the three.
