I would like to ask: what is the best way to terminate Darian’s romance as gently as possible and without ill feelings.

Would rushing to rescue Imoen and thus skipping his “special scene” be the best course; or would it be better to wait for that “special scene”, providing that it has an option to terminate romance and start/confirm friendship with Darian instead?

(I am currently playing as a female character who is not interested in Darian romantically, but would like to consider him a friend.)

P.S.

I am also interested in Darian/Aerie romance, so I am looking for a path that wouldn't "kill" it.

Well, that special scene is going to happen regardless - it just sets things up for other events to happen if you to Spellhold afterwards. It isn't directly romance related, but it does have Darian finally open up to Charname and begin to trust her.

If you're saying you want to avoid Darian making any directly romantic overtures at all, rushing to rescue Imoen would probably be best, otherwise when he admits he cares about Charname, you'll have to tell him you think of him only as a friend.

Darian/Aerie won't go well in SoA regardless, but they'll patch things up in ToB when they both realize how stupid they've been.
