i'm no pro at this but sometimes i find that if you are screened over a different area when the visual display happens or when you have the grp together in another area when the visual display happens you can avoid the failed assertion. usually i have the summoned creatures handle the mob while i take the grp outta sight to allow the transformation or spell to happen so i can avoid the assertion failure or in this case exertion.

That solution sadly didn't work for me. I get a CTD before the guardian forms so I can't even [Ctrl]-Y it to continue playing.

Are there any other ways round this?

I believe this error is caused by one of the mods chancing the fire elemental animation that is guarding the entrance to the tomb, it was supposed to be the pink fire elemental, and as the game lacks the resources to support it's all animations without the Infinity Animation(, the game might crash even with that mod installed as it's likely that the wrong animation is tried to be used).
So:

Are there any other ways round this?

You could --change-log the "ddguard7.cre" -file and use one of the backups that are made from the file during the log'ging, to fix the issue, and you do that by removing the excess .0000x. from the name and putting it as the "ddguard7.cre" to the game folders override folder.
Take note to not overwrite the weidu.exe if you extract the change-log.zip archive into your game, as the file in the archive is very old and overwriting with it will lead to problems that print out problems because the old weidu.exe version. The BWP actually has a version of this in the BiG World Install or Fixpack too.

And yes, you need to edit the .bat file with Notepad or similar programs.

Yep, Jarno Mikkola. my Mega Mod FAQ. Use of the BWS, and how to use it(scroll down that post a bit).
OK, desert dweller, welcome to the sanity, you are free to search for the limit, it's out there, we drew it in the sand. Ouh, actually it was still snow then.. but anyways.

Cheers muchly for that - will try that tonight - and thanks for the quick reply!

I definitely need the treasure it is guarding - going to face Firkraag in (late, admittedly) chapter 2, (always gone after him after spellhold before) and need all the help I can get!

I traced this error down to an animation added by D0 quest pack.  The animations d0salfir.vvc and d0salice.vvc have both the "translucent" and "blend" transparency flags set, but only one of those should be set.  DLTC editor will actually warn about this when checking these files.
