Near Infinity uses a dated low resolution application icon practically since the very beginning of the tool. That's why I'm thinking about replacing it with a modernized version or even a completely different icon.

Since I'm not the most artistically skilled person, I'd like to ask you for ideas or samples I can use as the new application icon for Near Infinity. The icon should preferably be 64x64 pixels or larger, but at the same time it should still be recognizable at sizes of 32x32 and smaller.

This is what it currently looks like (magnified version):

To start off I'm presenting my own creation, which is a modernized version of the original (in different sizes from 128x128 down to 16x16 pixels):

I'm looking forward to your suggestions. (Edit: I have posted the same topic here.)

The new icon definitely looks better.

I've always considered the design to be a little strange... glasses and a pencil?  I guess that's to represent "inspecting" and "editing" files.  It might be cool if someone could come up with a design that more represents "Near Infinity".

You'll have to ask the original author Jon Olav Hauglid about that. The application icon was apparently part of a public domain collection of icons over a decade (or more?) ago.

I still have the java cup as my Near Infinity icon, it's a variation of this picture:

Yep, Jarno Mikkola. my Mega Mod FAQ. Use of the BWS, and how to use it(scroll down that post a bit).
OK, desert dweller, welcome to the sanity, you are free to search for the limit, it's out there, we drew it in the sand. Ouh, actually it was still snow then.. but anyways.

Java "applications" aren't directly executable, so I can't include an icon that will be automatically displayed on the desktop or the explorer. (There are probably ways, but that would mean to lose platform-independence.) You'll see the icon in the taskbar and possibly in the window title if you start Near Infinity however.

I like the new suggestion. It nods to both the old and to infinity.

It looks like the new icon for Near Infinity will look like this (originally posted here by Cuv):

I will probably use it already in the next snapshot.

Why the sup-ed minus ? I could understand if it was a pen, but the pen could also be the arrow between the x and the infinity sign.
This is why the Cuv's pictures symbolism looks fine, you are writing stuff under the infinity sigh, so you are Ne... whe hehehhehe.

New one looks good.  And yes, the concept of "Near Infinity" really brings to mind memories of calculus and limits.

Why the sup-ed minus?

Mathematically it represents "x approaches infinity from the left", and as Mike1072 says, it is usually used in the context of taking a limit.  I thought it was a rather funny pun... :)

"Ok, I've just about had my FILL of riddle asking, quest assigning, insult throwing, pun hurling, hostage taking, iron mongering, smart-arsed fools, freaks, and felons that continually test my will, mettle, strength, intelligence, and most of all, patience! If you've got a straight answer ANYWHERE in that bent little head of yours, I want to hear it pretty damn quick or I'm going to take a large blunt object roughly the size of Elminster AND his hat, and stuff it lengthwise into a crevice of your being so seldom seen that even the denizens of the nine hells themselves wouldn't touch it with a twenty-foot rusty halberd! Have I MADE myself perfectly CLEAR?!"

 Mathematically it represents...
Yeah, I know... but the thing is, the tool can approach the game from the the other side too (compile to use in game, or use a game to use in mod, debug it and so forth). So the + and - don't really fit in to the picture ... alone. Just put a ± instead, and possibly the multiply and division signs too... ouh and division with zero to be illegal.... :P Or no symbol, as it's usually left out. Unless it really matters.
