It's either a new ARPG, OR a 4e RPG. I wish I knew.

It's this.

It sounds strange. More like some of the online FPS games than an MMO. Online multiplayer rather than single player. 4e is not a surprise, or a deal breaker. Cryptic - Silver Bullet +> heart.

Back from the brink.

Like RPGs? Like Star Wars? Think combining the two would be fun? Read Darths and Droids, and discover the line "Jar Jar, you're a genius".

These, in the day when heaven was falling,
The hour when earth's foundations fled,
Followed their mercenary calling
And took their wages and are dead.

I was just about to post that too, here's the announcement at Eurogamer.

Personally I think it sounds a bit iffy, and I'm not entirely sure what to think of it. Should I be looking forward to this? Well, it's not BioWare or Obsidian, so the standards are going to be lower than usual, and I've never liked 4e that much - too many lore/world changes.

I'm buying Bob's new book for sure, but I'm not so sure about this game. At any rate, the situation for D&D PC games doesn't look good if this is the next level.

Massively has an interview with Jack Emmert from Cryptic, and Matt Peckham from PC World comments on the game.

I wouldn't say MMORPG at all--Neverwinter is a cooperative RPG. You can play with a bunch of friends and experience Neverwinter and D&D in a brand-new way. We're trying to create new sorts of games that we call "OMGs" (online multiplayer games).

Next up: a new sort of game we call "OMGWTF."
:WTF:
(Eh... and how is an "online multiplayer game" different from a multiplayer online RPG?)

Ah, the irony. No one remembers the first NWN MMORPG (or OMGWTF or whatever)? Funny how everyone in those articles (indeed many folks who should know better) refer to the PC NWN as "the first NWN" which postdated the NWN MMORPG by a good decade.

(Miloch remarks somewhere that all MMORPGs appear, so to speak, twice. The first time as tragedy, the second time as farce.)

Darziak, if you're reading, you might want to change the thread title to "Neverwinter".

Apparently it's co-op a la BG2 rather than a MMO.

Yeah, and that means you don't have to put up with just anyone, you pick who you play with (with me that means the AI :P).

It sounds remarkably like DDO. Except that it's 4th edition, which is not an improvement. I don't have much faith in Cryptic anyway, after their last couple of games.

Yeah, I'm not putting it on my "high hopes" list either. But it might be worth taking a look at, depending on how well the actual rule implemenation goes.
