Jack Emmert Interview @ GameBanshee

Will our characters be saved locally or will they be on a closed server? If you choose to go the latter route, how do you intend to deal with player-created content that offers much greater experience and loot rewards than you'd like players to have access to?

Jack: Everything is on the server; you need to be online to play. There?s no offline play whatsoever.

That's it for me, I'll pass. Thanks and goodbye Cryptic.

Pleh. To paraphrase what I said earlier: OMG(WTF) = MMORPG. Maybe just without the first "M" (massive) in the latter there if they play their cards right.

Ditto.
I'm actually glad that he was upfront about this information and didn't prevaricate like so many game companies do.
Thanks for the info.:)

No problem. Sadly, this probably means that we won't see Obsidian developing NWN3, but hey, they're developing Dungeon Siege 3! :P

No single player campaign?! How can they even call it NWN...I know online play was big at least for the first...not sure about the 2nd...but man no single player campaign is pretty much epic fail!

Depends on how powerful the user-generated content abilities are. In theory, there's nothing stopping us creating single-player adventures that link together. In practice, it's probably going to be a puny UGC system that just assembles pre-made building blocks in not terribly interesting combinations.

MMOs are my other love, but Cryptic have dropped the ball badly on their last two releases. They're not a AAA company no matter how much they claim to be, so the chances of getting content generation capabilities of a level that the folks of this forum would be content with are minimal. UGC in an MMO is fraught with hurdles anyway, regarding balance, preventing copyrighted or grotesque content,quality-control, and outright abuse.

Having promiscuous games with multiple partners, all whilst experimenting with hallucinogenic substances, I think.

Jack Emmert commented on the game, saying:

"Ultimately it will be your judgement, but certainly that's what we're aiming for. This is an online RPG; a co-op Dragon Age with a touch of Oblivion's exploration. That is definitely our goal.

How... original. And he's saying that it's going to be like DA, just better and with more features? Now there's a lie for you.

They've launched the official site for the game. I had almost forgotten this title by now...

Edit: There's a short trailer available.

Well, the first one-third of the first sentence of the opening voiceover put this on my 'don't bother' list. If they can't even hire a VO artist that knows how to put drama into a sentence without resorting to cliched pronunciation then it speaks (yeuk!) badly for the game itself.

Yeah, I'm getting the D&D Daggerdale feeling here. See the thread around here if you don't yet know what I mean.

A summary of an interview with Shane Hensley in July, before the game was delayed. More...

- Cryptic's Neverwinter Map was used as a basis for the official WotC map of Neverwinter so it should be fairly close to accurate in layout to tabletop.
- 4th Edition ruleset
- Spellplague is an important factor in the main plot
- Brag: Some of the best traps you'll ever see in a game
- Neverwinter City is persistent
- Dungeons will mostly be instanced
- Henchmen will be in the game and can be used to make up your party if you're solo, some of these will be lore characters.
- Online all the time
- No Shards/separate servers, worldwide single server
- Cryptic has the ability to allow users to create their own persistent worlds, this won't be at launch but is being talked about

Big Changes to Cryptic's Neverwinter @IGN

"(...) Neverwinter is shifting from the co-operative multiplayer game that was announced last year and into full-fledged, free-to-play MMO territory. In fact, it's shifting towards the action end of the MMO spectrum."

I don't think this is a good news. We don't need another action MMO. I liked what they were doing before, cause it was something new and original.

How unoriginal. To make matters worse for Cryptic, there are better MMOs being released - Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Guild Wars 2. Neverwinter sounds more like a rehashed DDO with less features.
