Character wis DEX 20 isn't twice as agile as one with DEX 10, because increasing of abilities isn't linear. Difference between 19 and 20 si much bigger than between 10 and 11, so DEX 20 means that he is two points more dexterous than the most dexterous human in real world.

An exceptionally small number of canon characters in the Forgotten Realms are beyond even level 10... and the majority of those who do have higher levels are mages.

Hmm... not so sure about that. Harpers, drow fighters... it's hard to say how it is.

I quite agree with Nightmare(as usual). 2nd edition and even today's latest 3rd edition AD&D provides for some exceptionally powerful player characters past lv10. I remember having these same discussions with my old DungeonMasters and we have always come to the conclusion that a lv10-anything is really quite powerful. Of course while we would discuss such things some group fanatacist would immediately jump into our conversation and start spouting arguments like: "Terrask, Great Wyrms, Holy Avenger, etc". But really, a character can defeat such monsters and wield such powerful weapons by lv12 easily as long as the character is working together with other well developed team members. This is why every group I've ever been a part of have always agreed, as a group, to retire their character sometime during their level12 adventuring. The DungeonMaster would usually give the player time to think of a memorable/dramatic exit so that his/her character could retire with plenty of significance for the future storybooks/tales of legend. Then in the next campaign the retired character would live on in song and casual banter.

I can also agree that wizards might sometimes wish to get higher than lv12 because they are aiming for those specific high-level spells such as Delayed-Blast Fireball, Chainlightning, etc. But the instant the player is able to use such powerful magiks is the instant the rest of the group becomes either a crispy charred victim of collateral damage or obselete all together. So as you can see it seems more reasonable for the DungeonMaster to only let the player use the player-preferred high-level spell once and then insist on character retirement.

I found the Drizzt books quite annoying, he is only supposed to be what? level 14 or 15 yet they make him sound absolutely unbeatable. I find that very cheesy. Despite what people say I enjoyed the avatar series :). I am just generally not a very critical person.

Someone who considers level 14 or 15 to be low level doesn't really have the right to talk about things being cheesy :P.

I didn't say he was low level, level 14 and 15 are still really high but the way the author describes him and his movements are a bit overdone, if he was say level 35, how would you describe him then? ;) 'Drizzt looks at Entreri, Entreri dies, the end.....its a mini adventure' :P

so is it right then that so many characters in ToB (in the game) are over Drizzt's level because its true that its very rare for characters to be over level 10, ever Fzoul supreme head of the church of Bane is only lvl 9 :S and is demogorgon really supposed to be trapped in Watcher's keep (go Grazzt!)?

The normal human lifespan isn't long enough for most people to even reach level 20, so allowing characters to reach level 30+ in what's supposed to only be a couple of years is rather ridiculous :P.

And no, Demogorgon's avatar isn't trapped under Watcher's Keep in pnp. As far as I'm aware, Watcher's Keep doesn't even exist in pnp ;). However, if you ask me this sounds suspiciously similar to Iyachtu Xvim's avatar being trapped under Zhentil keep...

okay thanks for that, by the way is Bane allied to any demon princes or arch dukes of the hells? He sounds like he may be in with the mephistopholes/dispater block of arch dukes. I know its a little off topic but I want it for my rp on NWN ;)

Bane is a resident of Acheron rather than Baator, so doesn't really have much to do with the residents of the Nine Hells ;).

The rulers of Acheron are pretty much all gods, and they include the likes of Wee Jas, Gruumsh, Maglubiyet, and Hextor (note that of those lot, only Gruumish is worshipped in Faerun... though it has been suggested that Hextor and Bane are in fact different incarnations of the same deity).

The reason there are that many high-leveled people in the game is done for purely game-balancing purposes. Nothing more, nothing less.

It's rather difficult convert the 2E D&D planes -> 3E FR planes or visa versa. Some 3E planes are a combination of bits of two or more 3E planes, parts of the same 2E plane could now be part of two or more 3E planes, etc, some 2E planes were dropped altogether, some 3E planes are brand new, etc.

All in all, it would have been much less hastle and far less confusing if they'd simply kept things the way they were ;).

I'll second that one. The Blood War is more than a footnote, dammit!

They probably made so little mention of the Blood War in MotP so that you'd buy Book of Vile Darkness.

The Book of Vile Darkness seems a good name for the book containing their business plan then.

It was either some random demonness or some random female fallen paladin, neither of which have been named.
