Now, I have never quite been able to accept a halfling as a fighter. Their abilities and strengths are all just wrong for the role, but a halfling as a Ranger, on the other hand, seems to be quite natural, if you will pardon the pun.

Now, I have never done any modding with the infinity engine before, and was wondering how one could go about setting it up so that one could change the restrictions around what race can play as what class, such as what programs I will need and if there are any tutorials out there for it.

I also want to change Mazzy over to being a Ranger, what with trying to be reasonably consistant and all, and was wondering what I would need in order to achieve that as well.

Not all fighters are big burly tanks. Some are quick on their feet archers. Or dextrous, canny midgets who throw daggers. Lots of daggers.

Mazzy is more like a paladin than a ranger, really. As for how you could change her, you -might- be able to use Shadowkeeper, dunno if that follows the games racial restrictions. If not, then what you'd need to do is once you figure out how to make halflings rangerable (I cannot help you there) you'd probably need to make a Mazzy Fentan ranger .cre....it'd be very, very nasty. You'd have to reassign her various scripts and dialogues. My suggestion is that if you want her like that, give her the thief skills hide and move silent in Shadowkeeper, along with favored enemy (whatever).

Come to think of it, you could do that for your halfling wannabe ranger, too.

IIRC it is hard coded in the game, and race/class selection cannot be changed at the character creation screen.

You can always use shadowkeeper to change it if you want. The one thing I don't understand is why BGII needs more rangers.....

I like to use "The Bigg Pack" and make Mazzy my paladin.

It is hardcode, but it is possible to create a work-around option. (It's been detailed many times but I think most of those were lost with TeamBG.) Here's how to do it:

1) Create a new kit. If you want a halfling ranger, make a fighter kit called "Ranger" and add it to the K_D_HL.2da file, and any other race you want to access this kit.

2) The CLAB file for the kit, has a spell which creates an invisible/invulnerable creature. This cre has a script that changes the class of the PC to Ranger.

3) After starting the game, the character will change to Ranger class, at level 0. Levelup, and you'll have the ranger class options/abilies. The downside is you'll either have to ignore the extra HP/Profs created by the orginal class, or create a spell in the clab file (or script it on the invis/invul cre with a slight delay.) That resets things correctly.

It works well, although it's a pain in the ass. However, it is cool to make a Dwarven Sorcerer or Half-Orc druid this way. ;)

What's the problem with halflings being fighters? Let's say they are more agile, but weaker than humans. They will deliver less damage, but will deliver it more often and more accurate. That makes them good enough in my book.

I can't remember the formula for calculating how much a character can carry, but I find it dubious that any average person (including humans) could have a strength of 18. That's where RPGs come into the play - it's not about average Joes, it's about the extraordinary that have the spark to shape the world. How many people are able to carry 400 lbs in their backpack??? Not too many, I wager. Why are most RPG fighters able to do it, then? If it's possible with humans, why not with halflings? They would actually need less musculature to be that strong since they are more 'tightly packed.'

Besides, it's not D&D 1E, where a halfling was able to reach level 8M, or something like that, and was able to use daggers and short swords only, and must have been thieves, and so on. Yuck.

Fighter is the lone class that every race in the AD&D (both editions) game can be. It's the generic base line for adventurers. In original D&D only humans had classes. Elves, halflings, dwarves, ect were both a race and a class.

This is a computer RPG, characters are overpowered. A fighter of any race with an 18+STR is reasonably rare in most pnp AD&D games.

if you don't want to bother editing any game files, you can just use a character editor and set the class. Then add/remove innate abilites as needed. Shadowkeeper or NearInfinity would work fine.
