I was looking over some of the tutorials earlier and hit upon an idea that I'd like to garner some opinion on.

Random encounters don't seem frequent enough in the game, certainly not as consistent as they are in BGi or any of the Fallout Games.

If this idea were to be explored, what sort of encounters would you like to see and would you prefer them to all be serious?

A few easter eggs can't hurt, can they?

I love faceless criticism.

And your rationale?

random encounters are annoying and more are not needed.

I like them. They make each game different.

I especially like random encounters with dialogues, and things that can be done differently - like sparing lives, so on so forth.

Or a few randomly triggered things with dialogue and stuff are cool, but overdoing gets annoying. And I do not need to see another bandit.

Well, random encounters would be nice, but one should take into account that you cannot save during a random encounter. Thus you can screw up majorly due bugs, gameplay, computer crashes etc.

Without the ability to save during a random encounter it would make it much more difficult to debug, because the encounters are supposed to be, you know, random. :P

It'd be quite easy to allow saves during random encounters. It's merely setting a flag on the encounter areas.

Because easter eggs are generally rather unfunny, and break game immersion which is a key feature of RPGs.

It worked during Fallout II which still maintained a good sense of continuity despite the odd random encounters. And I'm well aware that FOII is a game that hardly takes itself seriously before anyone feels the need to point that out.

It might be an interesting idea over the constant rehash of NPC's, rule fixing, quest packs and so on that we have popping up invariably.

And not all Easter eggs are sore attempts at some sort of parody.

how come you always look so damn cool in every photo I see you in?!?

Speaking of modding, I listened to IER 3 yesterday, so you can have another quote for your signature: how come you sound so damn cool, as well as look it? It's unfair. Seriously.

I am reliably assured that Fallout II was not at all funny.

In that case, you should also be "reliably informed" that all opinion is subjective. Personally, I thought they were amusing.

No different here Sim, at least its a new proposal.

It would be good if major quests are started by random encounters (or random looking).
It brings the game closer to PnP which is a good thing.

There'll be at least two major quests in LoI which start off with random encounter preludes :).

And I'm reliably assured that you should look up the meaning of "funny" from Webster's.

But yes, definitely more random encounters. But not just mindless hack'n'slash, but a wide variety of topics. 'course... another nice thing would be somekinda way to avoid that particular encounter, of course... other than switching off party AI and running for the exit.

Also, adding some more BG I flavour in the form of random areas you can, but don't have to, explore through would be fun. There certainly ain't enough of them. Don't put too many NPCs into these areas, tho - it was mighty annoying how some of the cooler NPCs in BG I were in random spots in wilderness where you, RPing-wise, have no need, desire, or any other requirement to go to. In fact, common sense speaks up against it.

But yeah, more randomness and unnecessaryness is good :P

??? I loved that Monty Phyton random encounter. Or was it in FO1? (well beside of a couple of easter eggs, FO2 wasn't "funny", but why would it have been? It was still a goooood one IMO)

For the owner of this thread: I'd love such a mod. It'd be nice to see some random encounters which are not about just the usual monsterkilling. Yes, something like in FO, definitely. I remember travelling a lot in the wastelands just to find all the "unique" ones :)
