Official Dragon Age FAQ

My comments are in italics. They do not necessarily represent the views of Bioware Corporation, or for that matter, the FWMC Staff.

1.01: What is Dragon Age?

Dragon Age? is a revolutionary new PC roleplaying game from BioWare? Corp., the developer of Baldur?s Gate?, Neverwinter Nights?, Star WarsŪ: Knights of the Old Republic? and Jade Empire?.

Dragon Age is the next big CRPG from the people who brought you BGII, NWN and KotoR.

1.02: What are the key features of Dragon Age?

* Epic open ended storyline
* Top down party-based tactical 'combat mode'
* Cinematic 3rd person camera 'exploration mode'
* Full character customization (race, sex, class, abilities, spells, etc)
* Separate singleplayer and multiplayer campaigns
* End-user content creation tools

Dragon age will have parties, modding tools, and novel approaches to class and story.

1.03: What is the storyline of Dragon Age?

For the first time, you choose how your character?s story begins and that choice changes how your story unfolds. From a grim barbarian wanderer who is the last of his kind, to an exiled dwarven prince betrayed by his brother; each of the many 'origin' stories spins its own heroic tale of intrigue and romance.

Each origin story completely changes the setting and events of the game's first chapter and unlocks different storylines, villains, romances and items throughout the course of the game.

As you play, your actions shape the destiny of the world. Unite a powerful kingdom under your wise and just rule, enslave nations beneath the tyranny of your powerful necromancy or forge a legend of your own making.

Hero or villain, the choice is yours. Dragon Age features an awesome storyline and epic exploration in the BioWare RPG tradition.

The plot should be largely open-ended. You can make up your own history. Sounds good!

1.04: What will combat be like in Dragon Age?

Dragon Age will have real-time, party-based combat. The player explores the world with an over-the-shoulder camera view as seen in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, but when combat begins, the camera can be switched to a top-down tactical view similar to that in Baldur's Gate. Combat will be in real time but will allow the player to pause the action ('pause and play') and assign commands to his party members.

AT LAST! BG2 style party based combat!

1.05: Will Dragon Age have a multi-player component?

Dragon Age will have a fully developed multi-player campaign that follows the same core story as the single-player campaign, but which is optimized for cooperative play. Some competitive play modes will also be available. More information on multiplayer will be made available later in the development cycle.

Yes. Not all has been decided.

1.06: Will Dragon Age have a toolset for content creation?

Dragon Age will have a brand-new toolset for end-user content creation and BioWare will be providing support to the mod community ? supporting the BioWare Community is very important to BioWare. More information on the specific features available in the Dragon Age toolset will be made available at a later date.

Yes. Dragon Age Modding is going to be very important for both Bioware and Forgotten Wars, and I hope to see a lot of Dragon Age mods hosted here.

1.07: What ruleset will be used in Dragon Age?

Dragon Age will be using a brand new rule system developed specifically for the PC platform by BioWare. It will be a class-based rule system that allows a player to choose from a wide selection of skills, abilities and spells in the tradition of other fantasy roleplaying games.

Not AD&D. Seems more open ended than typical class restrictions.

1.08: What world does Dragon Age take place in?

Dragon Age is set in a new world developed by BioWare. A large team of writers and artists have been busy detailing the societies, religions, history, races, monsters, and economy of the Dragon Age world. Several new languages are also being developed for Dragon Age by a linguistics expert.

Like the rule system and game engine (see 1.12), the world is original to Dragon Age.

1.09: Is Dragon Age a sequel to Neverwinter Nights or Baldur's Gate?

Dragon Age is not a sequel per se to Neverwinter Nights or Baldur's Gate; instead, it is a spiritual successor to all of BioWare's past role-playing games.

It can take the best from both of them.

1.10: What playable races will be available in Dragon Age?

Elves, dwarves and humans will be included as playable races. There are other playable races as well, which will be revealed at a later date.

1.11: Do you have a party in Dragon Age?

Dragon Age is a party-based game with a wide variety of interesting NPCs to choose from. Players will be able to interact with their party members as never before, forming friendships, romances and rivalries. Players will have full control over party members during combat (similar to Baldur?s Gate). You can create one or more starting characters and you may choose whether you want to join up with other characters you meet in your travels.

YES! Yes, you do!

1.12: What game engine does Dragon Age use?

Dragon Age will use a brand-new cutting edge technology engine, called the BioWare Dragon Age Engine. BioWare's programmers are applying the experience learned from working on past BioWare engines like the BioWare Infinity Engine, the BioWare Aurora Engine, the BioWare Odyssey Engine and the BioWare Jade Empire Engine to create this new RPG engine.

The game engine is one of the many elements that Bioware are developing from scratch, keeping the ideas from all their previous products in mind, for Dragon Age.

1.13: Will Dragon Age have a Game Master client?

Dragon Age will have a Game Master client. More information on the specific features will be made available at a later date.

1.14: Who is publishing Dragon Age?

Dragon Age has not yet been signed with any publisher. It is a brand new intellectual property created and owned by BioWare.

No one is going to be breathing down Bioware's neck forcing them to release an inferior product. This will, however, mean Dragon Age takes longer to make. I think it's a fair trade off, personally.

1.15: When will Dragon Age be released?

A release date for Dragon Age has yet to be announced.

When it's done.
