I was thinking about the new rules system... and wondered how combat should be best dealt with.

Round based? Real-time? Auto or manual pause?

Point and click?

What combat abilities do you want to see?

Do you want full control over your character's body movement, especially with melee weapons? I reckon holding down the fire button and guiding your weapon with the mouse might make for some mean melee action :w00t: !

Should ranged weapons play a big part?

Wouldn't it be cool if the player could pick up objects (a la Half-Life 2) and use them against his/her foes ^_^ ?

Something like KotOR? More like BG2? NWN? Counter-Strike :P ?

Excited demands here, please :).

Something akin to the KotOR system where the characters actually engage each other, and perhaps you select different attacks to use (once again similar to KotOR) or perhaps even something like Pirates! where you choose an attack and the other person has to choose the right counter for it. The problem with this is of course the fact that you will have 6 (probably) party members to deal with. So I'd say a system much like KotOR's would be good, tell your chacter to attack, choose which moves to use, and you can pause yoursle whenever you want.
Forward he cried from the rear
And the front rank died
And the general sat and the lines on the map
Moved from side to side.

bah, only kotor if you can easily modify the script for your comrades. giving the jedis master crits and they dont use it and i cannot be bothered to babysit them.
it is decided they use realtime with pause button, i think. and this is a good decision. i like that.
complete control over you budies is a must. i rather play alone than with cronies who charge into a trap of eternal darkness.
though i wouldnt mind using those new motion capture machine things on your etremities and actually really doing the swing with a sword. :D and really going down the street. B)

The player will have the option to control either his party, on one character, at a time :).

I don't think control of melee combat is going to work for a party game, though ;).

I say that it should be realtime and with a pause button. I don't think that turn based would give the same difficulty and real time is faster anyway.

turnbased is way more tactical and thus for the standard gamer more dificult. turnbased strategy games are normaly prefered by strategy game lovers over rts. ;)

I think the BG/IWD system was perfect for combat - a system which has mechanics that you can learn, its still somewhat turn-based, but its not 'he attacks, I attack, he attacks, I attack'
Forward he cried from the rear
And the front rank died
And the general sat and the lines on the map
Moved from side to side.

Yep, I would approve such a choice for DA.

I would not appreciate a turn-based system. After all, DA is not a chessgame and, anyway, turn-based seems very unrealistic for me.

I would also prefer a pause system like in BG2, where you could choose yourself if you want autopause or not.

Do you want full control over your character's body movement, especially with melee weapons? I reckon holding down the fire button and guiding your weapon with the mouse might make for some mean melee action  !

I would like such an idea, but only it can be implemented. In general, if you give to your character only the command of attack, he can make more spectacular movements than if you control it yourself. I think about Morrowind : the combat system was quite boring, while in NWN was far better.

Heh ? But ranged weapons already played a big part in BG and NWN...

Here, Shed, you should specify what do you mean by that.

I think he meant mostly feats and HLAs.
