Actually, a version of of Romeo and Juliet set in Ust Natha with the two protagonists members of different Drow Houses... now that would be worth watching!Oh, but Drow care for each other.
They're just..... different

And THAT is as much of a bullsh*t as possible from the creators of the game - it is really a pure stupidity that a small group of outsiders (even if they are around 15th level or a bit higher) can take on and successfully wipe out a fully crowded drow city...
In other words, recreating the mistakes of others is not a good idea
Well, to the credit of BG2 developers they were actively pushing the 'work under cover' plot as opposite to asking PC and Co to wipe the city out.
Now, I do not know why I am doing it, but here we go: the idea would be slightly less unbelievable, if it was presented as a local conflict between Talos priesthood and Helm's. Stormistress Ada might set up a challenge to Anomen to assassinate a delegation of visiting Helmites in the temple of Helm or something of the kind. Then yes, it is somewhat better than asking 2 to 6 (do not forget that a 'party' can theoretically consist from PC and Anomen) to sack a city... Or if you are bent on doing new maps - then make PC's party a tiny fraction of an army in some troubled region - perhaps in Thayvian/Rashemen conflict # 4897 on Thayvian side.

I can only repeat what Sir Kalthorine said. The section of Ust'Natha in BG2 obviously isn't the entire city anyway.

Well I think the makers intended you to 'fight your way out' of Ust Natha instead of 'wipe all drow out'. Of course killing them is very easy and there's no reality there.

Bioware forgot to add spawn points?Maybe not, but one would imagine that if one region of the City were being taken apart by a group of adventurers, it is only logical that the rest of the City would respond in a pretty rapid and robust fashion! Drow may not care for each other, but they care for interfering outsiders even less. Especially violent ones who might threaten them...The section of Ust'Natha in BG2 obviously isn't the entire city anyway.

Matron Despana is but one Matron Mother of Ust Natha. One! And as far as I remeber her House is not even the First House of Ust Natha. Solaufein is allied with one of the other Houses and from what he says it is probably with one higher in hierarchy, than Despana. But, being a meager male, his allegiance to PC is nothing in a drow city where the power rests with female priesthood of Lolth. Males can never be leaders in traditional drow society, they are kill-at-awhim dirt beneath females' feet. Solaufein only lives by the graces of whatever high-ranking female who took him in after Phaere, lol
And why didn't anyone tell me that?
Something must be wrong when I don't know this after having finished the game about 36 times.

At least you can go into the city relatively unbothered and you can possibly eliminate guards before massive reinforces are coming in.
You can also have a high ranking cleric on your side as npc and you don't need to kill everyone, just make sure the npc stays alive while leaving the city.
Of course this requires massive scripting, not so easy as setting a whole city enemy on hour zero.
