The "sleep poison" which makes you faint in Spellhold. A harmless ingredient until activated by means of magic. :)

I hate this plot device.
IMHO PC should be paranoid enough to cast geas on Saemon before sailing with him.

I'm not fully up to speed on AD&D lore, but isnt geas an absolutely uber spell? Given that most PCs are circa lvl 14/15 when they depart for spellhold, if that, wouldn't that make it kinda silly?

I think Geas is only a level 5 or so spell. And even if he swore one to you, the wording might mean he was still able to poison you - or another one of his shipmates could.

Besides, what if he refused? He's the only ship captain available, so, if he refuses the Geas, you're f*cked up. It's not like Irenicus & Yoshimo, where there are plenty of Bounty Hunters, so, if Y. wanted the job, he had to accept the Geas as part of the contract.

I always thought that the "spell component in the soup" Irenicus mentioned was figurative. They'd probably have more than just the soup drugged, in case someone got sea-sick looking at the stew. Or just sea-sick looking at their meal in general, and only had a glass of wine/ale/whatever.

Then again, if someone DID get sea-sick and regurgitated their poisoned meal, it makes you wonder if the spell component would have worked, being expelled from their stomach before it reached the intestines and got into the bloodstream and all... :glare:

Feel free to tell me to shut up. ^_^

There are more plot devices that are just as bad in BG2:

- Your party composition
- Imoen = Bhaalspawn
- Irenicus lets you find your way to Spellhold on your own.
- There are being just one captain who will take you there for love or money
- Irenicus and Bodhi do not kill you in Spellhold
- Exit from Saughian city that takes you right to Underdark where Irenicus had landed
- You can rescue your 'loved one' from vampirism
- The whole Irenicus-Ellesime subplot
- Dead or not in the Nine Hells?

Talking about plot conveniences, what can we say about Athkatla itself? It's very lucky that Charname arrived, otherwise it would become swarmed by undead and the insane amount of liches there, and overrun by Shadows, and so on.

*Edit:

What kind of mod would that make? You arrive in Athkatla five months after the original time. Firkraag is attempting to take over the Council, The Shadow Lord is fifty kilometers from Athkatla, the Unseeing Eye cult has corrupted the churches...

You are assuming that <CHARNAME> is the only possible person who could stop all this. There is nothing to say that Keldorn and the Order would have failed to take down Firkraag and the Unseeing Eye cult themselves, for example. They just happen to ask you to do it.
