Yes, except that WeiDU never removes strings from the .tlk. The only way they get removed is through player intervention--installing a .tlk overwriting product such as the patch or some .tlk-overwriting mod, or reinstalling the game.

Erm - I wonder how the Tactics (the Ilyich part) gets mixed up with the Aerie/Anomen flirt pack lines routinely in fresh installations of Tactics, Ascension (Weidu version) and flirt pack. I have seen it happen plenty of times. May be a bug in the flirt pack mod, I fear, since I have no problems when the Flirt pack is not installed.

I am not saying the item files are saved -- but their names, and most likely the associated 'string numbers' (i.e. reffs to theirs positions in the tlk file).

No, like I said, only the item filenames are stored in the save. Associated "string numbers" aren't. They're stored within the ITM structure which is always exclusive of the savegame.
As an example, "blun01" might appear in the save game, but "Club", or "6701" (the associated string number) won't.

No, it's not. You are likely making an error in install order. There is no behavior in a standard, straightforward dialogue mod that will magically start popping other strings in.

Well, my speculation on what caused the issue was that some mods (Item Upgrade was the one I examined) were using ToB strrefs which showed up as garbage on SoA only installs. Investigation revealed that this conjecture wasn't terribly accurate, and it's not going to be happening in the Flirt Packs either, but I can raise my hand as an example of a modder who HAS managed to cause such a problem.

IIRC, there's a pattern to this problem experienced by people. (It's been fairly often reported with strref-heavy mods.) Usually, it's when mods are installed, new game started. A mod that's not the 'last' mod installed is uninstalled. It may or may not be reinstalled at a later point (experience varies) but tends to be more prominent if new mods are installed first. At this point it seems that sometimes people get those strref problems in game, but only with a savegame. A new game started with the current installation does not have this problem.

ie.
Mods installed = A B C D.

Uninstall mod, new setup = A B D //strref errors manifest with savegame.

Later install = A B D E C //strref errors manifest with savegame.

Thank you Hlid! I knew I was not the only one who noticed this; this is a well-known issue, not my desire to get into another catfight.

Freedom cannot be equated with goodness, virtue, or perfection. Freedom has its own unique self-contained nature; freedom is freedom ? not universal goodness. Any confusion or deliberate equalization of freedom with goodness and excellence is in itself negation of freedom, and acceptance of the path of restraint and enforcement.

Well known, perhaps, and yet nobody has a clue what causes it?

Not as of such no. It's odd because as far as I know weidu doesn't remove strrefs (I believe that's also been confirmed in this thread) and I don't know of any section of the savegame that captures strrefs of either items or dialogs. But it does show up fairly commonly in the instances I outlined. A few forum searches I'm sure would turn this up, I've seen it in several different instances of mod combos.

It's going to be some time before I can access Throne of Bhaal again, so does anyone mind telling me what Joneleth and Cespenar say? Did Joneleth threaten to blow Cespenar to pieces?
