I was reading the Moonshae Trilogy, a series of FR books from the late 1980s (I think) by Douglas Niles. They deal with Bhaal's attempts to take control of the Moonshae islands, and are pretty good (though I have a few minor gripes).

What is interesting is that Bhaal, intrigued by creatures created as the children of the Earthmother (a unicorn, leviathan and pack of wolves) decided to create some children of his own, spawning them in a corrupted druidic pool. They're even explicitly referred to as the Children of Bhaal, though bear no relation to the Children from the BG series. ;) The creatures in question are an owlbear, a flock of perytons and a displacer beast.

I thought this interesting, given that the novels predate the games, and no mention of these original Children is made in the games themselves. Though, yeah, they were created as a mockery of the Earthmother rather than a way for Bhaal to stay alive. The only reference I can think of is the Claw of Kazgoroth (the villain in the first of the trilogy) being an item in BG1.

I read this about 2 years ago. Wasn't there a mention at the end of the first book about followers of Kazgoroth removing the Claw and the Horn or parts etc from wherever he died?

Both are in BG1 as items iirc.

At the end of the first book, the Beast's body dissolved but its heart remains as a black stone which is picked up by the corrupted druid Trahern.

I've not finished the third book yet so don't know where it ends up.

No mention of the Claw at all, though.

I was going to bring this up myself as I recently finished the trilogy. I won't give any spoilers but I'm pretty sure the horn and claw weren't mentioned in any of them, just his heart which as Andyr said fell into Trahern's hands. It moves around a bit but dissappears as well I believe.

That story has no continuity.
First says Kazgoroth is from Malar.
Next, it's from Bhaal.
They drop(and squeeze) many balls at WoTC.

While Wizards of the Coast are to blame for many things, that isn't the case this time - the Moonshae trilogy was written a good decade before the company even existed :).

I don't recall Malar being mentioned...

Kazgoroth is, I assume, a unique fiend of some kind.

From the Villain's Lorebook:

In its true form, Kazgaroth resembles a huge tyrannosaur
with forelimbs that, while still short, match
the rest of its body and allow the Beast to run on all
fours if it wishes. When traveling in this manner,
consider Kazgarothís movement rate to be 18.
The Beast possesses a broad, powerful, scaly body
and tail with a maw that drips mildly acidic saliva
(the acid is taken into account in the biteís damage).
Its massive hindlegs end in heavy, clawed feet. In
this form (and in other forms if the Beast loses selfcontrol),
Kazgarothís beady eyes glow a fierce red.

Kazgaroth was a servant of Malar, while the children of Bhaal were created by the lord of murder. The two gods were working together in their machinations against the Earth Mother. I picture Kazgaroth as the precursor to the Tarrasque.
