how come it seems that many drow that go to the surface seem to come from menzoberranzan? viconia, i think, drizzt, vhaidra(from dark alliance), yasreana, even though this is a mod..., but why? is it like horrible to live there or something?
why do many drow flee from menzoberranzan?

It's probably just the only drow city most people know about. The only other one I can think of is Ust Natha, but that's just part of BG2, and it's quite small.

R.A. Salvatore (Drizzt) and Elaine Cunningham (Liriel Baenre) did it, and everyone else copied them .

so there's really no reason relating to AD&D?

Once Hasbro, the parent company of Forgotten Realms, Wizards of the Coast and AD&D, realized how successful R.A. Salvatore and Elaine Cunningham's novels were; they decided to capitalize on it by basing numerous AD&D campaigns on the Underdark-Menzoberranzan being the most popular city.so there's really no reason relating to AD&D?
To sum it up, your query does relate to AD&D.

There are different cities, take Rilauven for example, ruled by the wizards, not a matriarch.

It may be closer to the surface, matriach governemnt and other factors besides the authors mentioned.

Menzoberranzan is not only popular because of Drizzt but it's also where Lloth's avatar appeared during the ToT and it is the main drow city where Lloth worship is the only real religion in the city, the other main cities do tolerate a few others like Kiaranslee...etc albeit minor. Look here for some info on some drow cities: Look at me vile children!

Life as a drow is not easy, mainly becasue of the crap you have to put up with from other drow, or your psycotic goddess. Many drow (a small minority, but still significant) would flee if they thought they had a chance at survival.
