This idea has been floating around in my head for a while. I like modding. I like reality shows where people compete against each other. So I announce a contest! You make an NPC for BG2, and I will judge it! Each week, one person will be eliminated, and I will add something to what has to be added. An example:

First Week, you have to make the CRE file, write and code the joining and leaving dialouges, and do the portrait.

Second Week: Take what you did from the First Week, and add four banters and five interjections.

Third Week: Take the stuff from the first and second weeks, and add 4 banters, 5 more interjections, and a custom item.

This will keep going until all but one is eliminated, and that person is crowned king/queen of NPC Modding!

How you enter: Post that you will enter in this topic, and add in the name of your NPC and his/her class.
At the end of the week (friday), you PM me the link to where to download your NPC.
Check this Topic for who is eliminated, and the next requirements.

Sound intiresting? I hope so!

So.. if 40 people enter.. this contest will be 40 weeks long?

Also, I am guessing this is not for the lower skill level, since if you add something like... create a custom spell with new spell animation, not every one will be able.

Why are you the only judge?? Any other judges...

Other than those comments.. I am interested

NPC NAME: Archinus Shank
NPC RACE: Half-Elf
NPC CLASS: Wizard-Necromancer

OOH. Sorry bout that. In this order:

If an absurd amount of people enter, I will increase the amount of people booted each week.

Any Skill level is welcome, cause I won't be asking for stuff like that. I promise that.

I am the only judge, cause I don't think anyone else would want to judge. Contact me if I'm wrong.

And, can you by any chance change your class? I don't have ToB installed due to technical difficulties, so I don't have wild mage. Sorry bout that.

Over at G3, Domi raised some valid points. So eliminating goes away.

How is it going to be judged then, and when does it start, and what is needed for the first week?

I have only coded one.. and the only reason it worked, is Shed went over it and recoded it. But I learned. Look at is as, it is forcing you to learn how to do what he asks.. so you can win.

It's not much of a contest if no-one ever looses.

However, if you rename it to the NPC Modding Exposition, and maybe write a brief tutorial on each weeks task, and provide a sample, then it would, in my view, be much more useful. You'll be teaching people to create a mod (even if it is another NPC), in small steps, in a group, with guidance, towards a goal.

Igi, what I did not like about elimination, was that it will only increase the amount of abandoned NPCs which are not lacking :) I like your suggestion on turning it into an open tutorial session. If you will have some set amount of weeks in running (ie say 2-3 months it will help people to catch up if they miss a week or so...) then in the end you can always pick up your favorite (as would anyone else).

I will try to participate for at least a couple of first weeks - I plan to use my NPC as not joinable, but a quest-giver with lots of dialogue afterwards, so banters/interjections development is where I will leave off. <_<

Okay people, I know its a bit early, but it's time for the first specs! You've got till friday to finish up, and if you finish sooner, send them my way. Here we go!

CRE file, TP2, Joining/Rejoining/Kickout Dialog, installer, 5 banters for five different people, 5 Interjections.

This maybe a tall order for some, and hardly worth getting out of bed for others, but this should be a nice starting ground.

That is more stuff, than some mods already have. I am not sure if I will have time. my current NPC is taking up my time now.. sorry....

I'm repeating what I posted at G3, since I'm offering help.

It is a bit of a tall order, especially if people are tackling these things for the first time (which I hope some of the participants will be). I'd suggest reducing the number of banters and leaving interjections for another week.

I like this idea, and I really hope some people who are trying to make an NPC for the first time give it a shot. My schedule over the next three weeks is going to be pretty rotten, so I'll be hard-pressed to do an entry. That being the case, I'd like to offer my help if any participants run into trouble and need advice. Feel free to contact me at llamababe@pocketplane.net, and I'll try to assist you in troubleshooting your entry.

Would a better option not be to go for the "vital" things first? Get the rep complaints, tree of life gut check, welcome to hell dialogue, all the stuff you HAVE to have worked out before going for interjections?

I'd have suggested taking a slower approach, which would hopefully induce people who haven't made an NPC before to enter, something along the lines of:

Week 1: .cre file
Week 2: Intro speach, joining dialog, kick-out dialog
Week 3: Custom item
Week 4: Banters
Week 5: Interjections
Week 6: Scripting / encounter / quest
Week 7: Scripting / encounter / quest (continued)
Week 8: Introduction to love-talks / romance (optional)
Week 9: Free modding week
Week 10: Free modding week + Final submissions

With a side-section each week on how to distribute the work (i.e. writing a tp2 section)

The 'free modding week' would be time where entrants could ask questions and work own their NPC's at their own steam, leading towards a dramatic conclusion of a judging contest at the end of week 10!

But.. thats just how I'd do it :)

I'll see if I can get time to enter, although I feel a Friday deadline it bad for people who work.

I like igi's schedule, because weeks 4 through week 10 are very much up to the contestant in terms of what content s/he'd like to add :)
