I found you can download Wiz 7 here, but a friend reported problems getting it to work.

Wonderful game, but really, I'm not surprised it (and its successor, Wizardry 8) didn't make it onto the list-they never had much publicity, and they're the epitome of the old-school rpg (i.e. pre-npc's with personality). And with the company that made them out of business, the series has had its say.

"The righteous need not cower before the drumbeat of human progress. Though the song of yesterday fades into the challenge of tomorrow, God still watches and judges us. Evil lurks in the datalinks as it lurked in the streets of yesterday, but it was never the streets that were evil." - Sister Miriam Godwinson, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri

Glad to see Arcanum's listed there, not many people play it. I voted for Arcanum because we are voting for the vanilla games, and the the main quest for Arcanum had much more depth and was a lot longer than that of Morrowind.

I've never played the Fallout series, something I've been meaning to do for quite some time (and should since Bethesda is developing Fallout 3). However, Planescape: Torment I only got a hold of this summer, for the first time. That game made my eyes bleed. I really tried to play it, but combination of bad graphics and awful game mechanics (which seem like they would have been poor even when the game was first released) have halted all efforts to get through that sucker. Maybe I'll try again later. Maybe after I finish beating BGII... for the umpteenth time.

I'm talking about the character creation system being poor - it doesn't offer much options like Talents (AD&D equivalent of Perks/Feats) for example. Also, since they changed character creation and developement they could come up with something more plausible and elastic than switching classes.
I'm not talking about creating a new character other than Nameless One, of course.

BG2 doesn't allow feats either. Feats didn't exist until 3e D&D (which didn't even exist in 2000, when PS:T was published). Combat isn't a focus of that game, anyway. Frankly, TNO could bulldoze pretty much anything on his own.

To each their own.

I said, talents.
Also, BG2 character development sucked too.

To each their own, I guess. Personally, I hate the "talents" used by most RPGs today.

I'd have to disagree with the notion BG2 had no character development, from what I've seen with many other RPGs, many tend to make cardboard copies of each other, either saying yes or no to pretty much the same questions.
While I admit it can be improved (that's why the modding community is so large) vanilla BG2 still holds its own ground seeing on how not everyone is there simply for you, everyone could very well have their own agenda to pursue, and you'll either deal with it, or lose another team member.

Still I'm yet to see one RPG which is very open with its ways of playing through and ending. There is always room for improvement in every game really.

(and btw I was also not impressed with PS:T's graphic issues, first an eyestrain but then again, its from an earlier generation. I found the character diversity on that one though to be really worth my while, not enough of that badass talk elsewhere in the multiverse cutter, and you know it.) :D
(just too bad on how they ended)

Frankly, after playing games like Fallout or ADOM, I was able to finish BG2 only because I used Shadowkeeper to add some interesting abilities to characters.
Also, I hated how the game was NPC-centred and no-one complimented my characters looks, while complimented Jaheira or Viconia.

There's a guy in the Copper Coronet that admires a female PC with high enough charisma, among other characters.

Good graphics do not a good game make, imo. I thought PS:T had the best graphics of the IE games (but then, I still like the graphics in WoX and Starflight2 so what do I know?) Oblivion had incredible graphics, but frankly I thought it wasn't a very good game.

Talk about bad graphics! Always wanted to play Arcanum. Could never get over the fact that the characters looked like bowling pins. I keep asking *everywhere* if someone did a mod importing BG avatars into it, and all I get is a resounding silence. Damn. A good game, by all accounts, but impossible to play in its vanilla state.

What?! Oblivion was, like a second coming of Christ, it got the best scores. Don't diss Oblivion, it has Immershun and all.

It has something to do with the fact that unlike Bioware, Troika cared about providing avatars of characters that actually looked like they lived in the gaming world.

As for the Arcanum itself - I find it's character creation and development system unrealistic and vastly inferior to that of Fallout or ADOM.

A good game, by all accounts, but impossible to play in its vanilla state.

In what way? I never heard about anyone else finding Arcanum impossible to play in its vanilla state.

Arcanum is a good game. Its one of the few game settings that I like where technology and magic coexist. Normally I like my D&D like games to be just swords and sorcery, no technology. But Arcanum pulled it off, so its one of my favorites. The downside is the hideous looking character graphics.

Baldur's Gate is the best. SoA and ToB are either very good, but I just like this ambiency of the first BG. The plot was IMHO much better than in the sequels, the major disadvantage was only lack of romances and party interactions, but fortunately there is the mod that adds it. Furthermore, I'm fond of old-looking games, and images of weapon and armour (especially shields and helmets) were in BG 1 more "normal", I mean: they look like shields, not like shapeless pieces of metal.

I voted for BG2: SoA. I liked both SoA and ToB but SoA was definately better IMO.

I'm a BG2 girl (and in my mind, SoA & ToB really can't be separated, somehow). Always have been, and always will be, it has a very special place in my heart.

BUT I've been playing a lot of TES 4: Oblivion lately, and I can't believe it's not on this poll!! I see TES, I see Daggerfall, and I see Morrowind, but where's Oblivion? ^_^ I'm totally hooked on this game, at the moment (only time will tell if it's a passing fling, or something more).

Planescape: Torment is a close runner up. A very close runner up....

Couldn't agree more there... for me, SoA and ToB can't be separated.

Although I have to disagree about torment. I got so bored of within 10 mins due to TOO MUCH TEXTS!

I had to vote for Baldur's Gate. Even the NPC interaction BG2 provides can't make up for the almost absolute freedom to roam in BG1. I also enjoy guiding a wimpy party ever so carefully through hordes of kobolds, hobgoblins, xvarts, and the like. Yeah, I run away a lot more in BG1... but I have fun doing it! :)

All of these games are great but I still cant believe not even one person has not voted for Neverwinter Nights!

Its nice to kill some baddies by yourself or with a henchman or two and not have to rely and use 6 people like in the bg's

dont get me wrong though I still voted for BG2 heh...

I am casting another vote for an underdog in this poll. Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines.

What's not to like? Dark, gothic atmosphere. Adult themes. Interesting story with different options depending on clan and gender. The most phenomenal voice acting I've ever heard in a game. VTMB was nearly perfect. Or at least, it was after we patched the bugs out of it.

I have played the game multiple times as every playable clan. I know more about VTMB than any other game I have ever owned, both technically and in terms of gameplay. Unfortunately, that is precisely why I haven't been able to play it again for a long time. I got so involved in the game technically that I can no longer simply enjoy it as a game.

It gets my vote for being the only game to ever draw me in so completely.
