Hello, Ascension64!

I was wondering if BGT's WeiDU installer could be technically set to just do what EasyTuTu smartly does: to create its own directorty where BGT would import and convert files from the BG1 and BG2 directories, making it really independent from their presence once the installation is completed.

This would have a double benefit: (1) If a user would like to, hard drive space might be saved by uninstalling the "sources" after BGT successfully installed on Hard Disk and more importantly (2) users might be able to avoid installing Baldur's Gate 1/TotSC and Baldur's Gate 2/ToB every time a new clean BGT installation is needed.

Thanks!

You can duplicate BG2 folder using the Multi Install Tool (check Copy Data and Copy Music), so you can have a pure BG2 installation if you need it.

Unlike classic Tutu, BGT-WeiDU does not alter BG1 at all. There is really no need to reinstall BG1 each time you need to install a fresh copy of BGT-WeiDU. I have never touched my BG1 install and, believe me, I have installed BGT-WeiDU at least a dozen times !

I see your point but people might want to mod the BG1 Installation after installing BGT and BGT requires two clean installations of BG and BG2 in order to perform its conversion. Easy TuTu is smart because it takes the needed resources from the BG1 and BG2 folders even if, for example, Baldurdash and Dudleyfixes are installed as it comes with its own Dialog.tlk and override resources.

At least that's what I have understood...

And ofcourse those copied files takes some HDD place just like if u have copied them manually. BGT also copy and rename files from BG1 but u can still play directly BG2 portion withour any interferences. In tutu u have to uninstall AFAIR.
BTW for tutu u still can't use certain BG1 mods...so no, it's not so smart ^^

There's a big difference here between Tutu and EasyTutu. Tutu is installed on top of your BG2 install, converting it into your Tutu install. EasyTutu creates a new multi-install of BG2, copying only the resources it needs from BG2 and then copies and converts the relevant files from the BG1 data files.

So that's all about?
LoL, u can just copy clean installation of BG2 into different directory and change paths or use multi install tool and the effect will be the same. No needs to redesign installation procedures of BGT.

A heavily modded BGT installation will easily take up to 10-12 Gbs of hard space...I would trust that the solution taken by Macready with his Easy TuTu not only is much more elegant but also more efficient in terms of final hard disk space requirements...

BGT is BG1 story addition to BG2 installation. Easy Tutu gets only required BG2 resources but don't give opportunity to play BG2+ToB with the same installation. BGT won't be BG1 converted engine...and as it require all BG2 resources it would be pointless to create it's own directory with ALL THE SAME FILES as in real BG2 (plus BG1 files).

I fail to see the point. The only "advantage" of Easy-Tutu method is to enable to play true modded BG1 while enable installing BGT-WeiDU. But I don't think many people will play (modded) BG1 and BGT-WeiDU together. I don't think many people will play BG1 when they own BG2 and can play with BGT-WeiDU or BG1Tutu.

About disk space saved, well in this specific case, you will need two installation of BG1. One pure installation to enable BGT-WeiDU installation, and one modded installation. Don't forget that Easy-Tutu duplicate a BG2 installation because you cannot play BG1 and BG2 part at the same time. BGT-WeiDU allow you to play BG1 and BG2 part at the same time, so for most people, BGT-WeiDU is a better approach than EasyTutu when speaking about disk space saving.

And EasyTutu approach is NOT good for international players because of dialog.tlk replacement.

None of my business, just passing through, just wanted to point out...

advantages of a single all-encompassing installer which
a. checks each required resource for completeness/correctness in installation
b. then copies relevant basic resources from the installed base
c. then unpacks a pre-repaired, tested, uniform override folder (even biffed if required)
d. then allows freedom from the base install (mod or not, delete, whatever)
e. and is installable/uninstallable from the desktop/shortcuts along with standard professional install games and programs

has distinct and obvious advantages from a modding and trouble-shooting perspective. The creation of a multi-lingual set of versions (or even an interactive choice on install, just like your favorite non-gaming programs) is no more difficult a task then switching the base install and override used to create the installer.

If BGT already accomplishes all this, then you folks are right, and there is no advantage to building a similar BGT installer. Space issues (which I think are pretty moot in this day and age, where space is relatively easy to add) aside, serious players want comfortable, simple, no-hassle installations. And regardless of platform/game choice, anyone downloading either BGT or EasyTutu is by definition a serious player.

1. BGT uses all BG2 resources...so why waste time by some unecessery file check?
2. BGT was designed also to bring BG2 mods along with BG1 mods...if u had BG2 modded and BGT instalator working as u said u would get non modded BGT instead of modded one.
3. redesinging BGT installation procedures would result with redesinging all big mods installation procedures (for compatibility)
There's more work than profits from it...so IMHO...leave it as it is now.
