This portrait came about randomly fiddling with trying to make an alternative Xan portrait (I don't like the BG1 portrait, and though Plasmocat's version is fantastic it isn't quite how I envision Xan). So that's why he's got Xan's robe and hair and stuff. ;)

Comments and criticisms welcome! :)

It's hard to put my finger on it, but the face doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the portrait...like the head in the rest of the portrait is at a different angle than the face, possibly (tilted forward more or some such).

"Tyranny is a quiet thing at first, a prim and proper lady pursing her lips and shaking her head disapprovingly, asking, well what were you doing (wearing that dress, walking home at that hour, expressing those inappropriate thoughts) anyway? It's subtle and insidious, disguised as reasonable precautions which become more and more oppressive over time, until our lives are defined by the things we must avoid. She's easy enough to agree with, after all, she's only trying to help -- and yet she's one of the most dangerous influences we face, because if she prevails, it puts the raping, robbing, axe-wielding madmen of the world in complete control. Eventually they'll barely need to wield a thing, all they'll have to do is leer menacingly and we fall all over ourselves trying to placate them." -godlizard

I have always liked Xan. I always pictured him looking more arrogant. (Maybe sharper features)If I have some time, I might try to draw some line art for you to color. (I can draw but I can't color so well...I think you know this already.) He really needs a new pose. Maybe less cloak. The collar on the cloak is too much. A hood would be better. The arms in the air always looked a little off. I will try to do something in the next few weeks if I can find some extra time.

I did some stuff to the chin. The light angle wasn't quite right. Anything to do with the neck is well beyond my feeble artistic ability.

That looks loads better ^^ I didn't think about changing the chin.

The neck would require a repaint, which I'm not sure I'm up for - but if anyone else would like to take a crack at it, feel free! :)

When I am back from holidays I will whip up something...you are going to have to color it though. Expect a more elven face. What I never liked about Xan is he looked too human. Liam check out the CA work area, you will see some recent examples of my line art. I have to admit it will be a challenge to draw someone without boobs.

That sounds like fun: post the line drawing, and let Xan fans color it in!

Dang, stuff like this really makes me respect the people who make portraits.

My horrible attempt might amuse someone, just don't take it too seriously <_<

...I think my skills are more suited to photoshops of the "silly" variety. :P

[edit] Ears! =D Yes, he definitely needs them. But I think they're a bit high - it makes him look a bit like a cat. A human's ears line up with the eyebrow and underside of the nose (pretty much). As far as I know, elf ears - while longer and pointier - are located in the same place. Blue lines are the curve of the skull, red line is human ear, green line elf ear.

Hmm. Now that you mention it, his nose does look like it's been broken at some point, and is now pointed in the wrong direction. Flipping it did the trick.

And you're right about the ears.

Maybe, if the entire community bands together, we might be able to come up with the perfect portrait for Xan.

I would darken the hair and robes a bit more, and sharpen the image lightly.
