I also finally figured out that I can play OB as long as I don't go outside! As soon as I go outside, the screen goes blank - I can do CAL and it restores it, but then it goes blank again right away. But indoors, everything works fine. I guess I am truly under house arrest! WTF?

It's HDR. Turn the HDR off and you're golden. I had the same problem with my 7900GT. It's caused by custom meshes not jiving right with HDR on certain Nvidia card/driver combinations. It's very easy to fix but you'll have to download NifScope (if you haven't already).

The black screen fix involves correcting nif files using NifScope.
1. Triangulate the mesh.
2. Update tangent space on the mesh.
3. Make normals.
4. Smooth normals.

I believe that steps #1 and #2 (especially #2) are all that is really needed in most cases, but I'm not 100% sure. Doing all three definitely eliminates the problem.

Marcos's Samurai Armor did it to me. I couldn't imagine not being able to use HDR and that armor set so I tried it out and it was very easy. Steps 1 and 2 is all it took.

What you have to do is put her outside naked and begin to put stuff on her. Once you equip the item that's causing it the screen will go black. That's the offending mesh. Use the steps above to fix it and test again. It seemed to work the first time, every time for me so far.

it's not that I mind her funbags, I don't like the crotch-towel or whatever you call it and I thought the whole thing was a one-piece. Somebody told me it was a two-piece so I decided to try it out. I couldn't find a dress or pants that I liked, so I just made my own. I like it because it covers her feet, I like the no-feet-showing-long-dress look.. better seen here

Heh, I've never tried an army shot... but I wonder how much I'd lag? x2 3800, x1950pro, 2GB RAM.

So this is caused by just having a certain mesh in my Inventory - even if my pc is not wearing it? I never had this problem until very recently - so it must be something I recently installed. The major thing has been Babs and tons of clothing from the shop. Then SI.

I appreciate the info here, DIE75, and am going to store it in the SS Guides thread for other people - but like Hector said, I probably won't go that route as it seems like it could take a while. I might google to see if someone has isolated a work-around in terms of what clothing, etc. to eliminate. I guess I will switch HDR off for now.

So this is not a problem with ATI cards, eh?

But all the lights go out, so how can I see what clothing makes the lights go out if the lights are out? The screens go black immediately upon going outside. I can CAL, but it only goes on for about a second.

gf1: Aha, I could dress inside and step outside and if it goes black... alright, that may work. Other suggestions are more than welcomed!

@Greatfool1: I can't believe I didn't comment on the dolls screens last night. I am suffering from a nasty little cold. That may have been it. It had to be, cuz you have my girl Layla multiplied many times. To be honest, it did put a huge smile on my face. That's my girl! The one that started it all! It was so good to see her out of retirement!

I get that problem too but that didn't solve it mine happens if I look in a certain direction the screen goes black, but I look in another direction it's ok. It sucks.

I will definitely try this, SeV. Thanks for the link. Luchaire did a real cool write-up/patch there and I may be one of the ones that his patch helps.

I know Nvidia card drivers couldnt handle all the hires textuers in QTP3 and it would make my screen do like you said outside. Not sure if QTP2 would do the same. I am jsut not useing ay texture packs until I get a video card upgrade.

So this does not happen with ATI cards?

No, it's the mesh reacting to the HDR. So you have to be wearing it and it has to be on screen. If you go third person and have an outfit/weapon on with the offending mesh, it will go black. Some people in the thread said they found drivers that help but I wasn't able to do that. Plus I only have around 35 mods so it was easy to pin down. I think the 1.2 patch aggravated the problem because it never happened before that.

It does not affect ATI cards. This is strictly a Nvidia problem...

Yeah, all of this started for me after I installed SI. But I have not installed the final 1.2 patch - just the one on the SI disk. Also, I installed Bab's around the same time. This is strange to me though, because I reloaded an old Layla save and she does not have the same clothes that my male char was wearing - but both get the black screen. Oh but they both have the same Biu's body mod because of the way Bab's works. Layla used to be Eshmes V3 prior to Babs and the 1.2 patch - and never had a problem like this.

I think if I upgrade, I may be going with an ATI card. Is there an equivalent to the 8800? I can look this up, though I guess the high end ATI1950 allows HDR and AA simultaneously, so that may be a real good value - without breaking the bank, so to speak.

Edit: Thanks everyone for this very useful and timely info. I didn't even consider it could be a hardware incompatibility issue.

@ Greatfool1 - I think there is something roughly equivelant to that (can't remeber) but I know it is still expensive, and Oblivion doesn't always like to play nice with ATI does it? I don't remember

Mystyk: Nice Breton there. I imagined one Breton my character met in a TES Forum RP to look just like that! Give her to me! XD

She's an Imperial. I only made her to test out a shop I made, but as all my creations need to be presentable before exiting the sewers, I got a good face while using the randomise button and decided to keep her - and do the tutorial dungeon. That was very dull, btw. Oddly she looks better with no facial texture packs. I've since changed her hair as well. It just looks as if she took the knot out as I kept it short.
I don't have a clear image but lately she's been having issues with her face. It's very pale with clearly defined cheeks...as if she's been using her mother's make-up kit I tried changing the tone a few times but it just went all splotchy.
If anyone has ever imported a FaceGen file onto a mystic elf savegame that is almost the level of paleness she has.

Thanks for the PM's regarding the purple sorceress retexture. Hopefully any issues can be fixed and then I'll upload it.

Hey thanks for this and the other info. I will check it out especially since it isn't as costly as I would have expected for a brand new card from ATI/Sapphire.
