So since I switch characters as regularly as some people change undies, I figured I better learn how to do some very simple retexturing myself. Not going well so far.

Here's the thing: I'm using Gimp. I've got the dds plugin. I'm trying to darken one of Slof's wigs just a touch - but I'm not even at the darkening point. I open the (copy of the) texture in gimp, then resave. I finally figured out I needed mipmaps checked to have it not look like sheets of color instead of hair, but it seems no matter what format I choose to save in, when I check in-game it's got alpha problems. It'll show up fine & dandy in the menu & from far away, but look up close & it goes all transparent.

Anyone know what I'm doing horribly wrong? I'm pretty sure if I can figure out the right way to save the texture, I can get the color adjusted the way I want. I've googled, but everything I find that talks about saving textures is specific to photoshop.

Any help offered is much appreciated!

EDIT: Apparently solved - needed another separate program, as gimp doesn't appear to do saving of the dds mipmaps right yet. Found that on my - what - 12th page of google searching? *sigh* No one told me the getting of a proper program would be the main texture headache!

whaaa? *blinks*

Personally.. I've never had problems with GIMP and mipmaps O_o

Basically.. the trick to mipmaps in GIMP.. is to flatten the image before saving as a dds. Then using "Generate Mipmaps" works like a dream, for me, when I use GIMP =)

Just tried that again - nope - this is what I end up with:hairprob.jpg

Perhaps that works fine with non-hair retexturing?

But since you're sort of an expert, perhaps you can answer me this: is it possible to recolor hair, so it's two colors, and have it show up in-game? I can do it with the wigs, but it doesn't seem to be working on a babe hairstyle. nvm, figured that out (I think)

I know what the problem with that one is =)
the texture's alpha channel is.. not being saved, for some reason :<

Its not a problem with the mipmaps at all =/

Did you fill in the, um, transparent bits with black, btw? =) That's the only thing I could think of to cause it..

All I know is that when I resave it with DXTBmp, it's fine.

that's.. really, really weird O_o

Mind you, I've never used GIMP for something with alpha channels. but.. still.. that's very, very odd O_o

And, as I've attempted (and not done well at) some work on a face texture, it does seem to be perhaps only when working with hair (or perhaps hair-like stuff).

OK, new question: Where on Exnem's body textures is the shoulder? I'm trying to add a tattoo to the outer upper arm, right at the shoulder (left arm)

edit: nvm I got it.

One small question, a bit out of topic, but still about Gimp. Does it allow you to create or change the normal maps?

Thanks for answer
