As the title says I have been trying to make a transparent normal map in gimp but the closest I have yet been able to do is make a shiny one. Anyone know how i could do this?

If you want to just tone down a normal map, you could always do this.

1. Delete all the Mipmaps
2. Create a new layer and place it below the Main Layer
3. Adjust the Main Layer opacity slider to whatever value you want.
4. When you have something you like, merge Down the Main layer to the new layer
5. Save-As, generate mipmaps, ect.

It's a quick way to reduce the super shine, although it won't always be the best way to reduce it sometimes.
This is especially true it you have a texture with something that needs to be shiny, and something that doesn't.
Like the hilt of a sword and the blade.

Just like with most generated normal maps, the best way to make them, and adjust them, may sometimes be by having to do everything by hand. Takes a lot more work, but can produce extreme results. You can see just how HERE. Very handy tutorial and explanation...
A moderate amount of evil is nature to all.
If one is to control their nature, then they
must accept both the light and the dark.

Doppler's Armory - I'll do something...eventually...
