BG2 : 3-man party is where it's at

It's something I also do in Pokémon.... I can't stand big parties. The less, the better. 6 people onscreen is just a mess and takes waaaay too long to manage. Initially I had 6, then cut down to 5, then 4, now 3. I like 3 people parties.... Typically I'll take Edwin if my main isn't a dualled mage or sorcerer. For cleric I'll vary, I'll either take Jaheira, Anomen, or Viconia.
Finally, I need a fighter, usually my main character.

This is the party I'm using right now to finish the game:
Wizard Slayer ( first time I played with this class) dualled to thief
-grandmastery in clubs ( first time too, gotta experiment after a certain point, eh) with the Club of detonation +5 and harmony shield

Edwin

Anomen

That's it. Last game I finished was with Sheena, Cernd, and my main character, who was an Undead Hunter.

Anyway, you'd think these groups would be weaker but they aren't. I think they are more powerful, to be honest.
Mages, druids and clerics become powerful soon, so you can start summoning skeleton warriors and fire elementals and whatnot to compensate for the few characters.

This has an interesting consequence.... I've had BG2 for 5 years and I haven't gotten sick of it. I finished it 4 times over the last month.... and what keeps me coming back are the characters. Since I get so few characters in my party, I always play a game thinking ahead to whom I'll pick on the next game.


P.S. Why the hell do we have two thieves dualled to mage ( imoen and nalia) and no fighter/thief in the game? Or fighter mage? What were they thinking?

I happen to agree with you.


My reasons for liking 4 person groups is that I just find it easier to control (I hate AI). I have a more fun experience. the fact that XP is gained faster is just a side benefit.

Another great thing about smaller parties is that multiclasses are even better also. I'm actually not a big fan of Edwin or other single-classed guys in a smaller group. You just don't need them.

I consider Imoen a single classed mage for my groups, who also handles all of the thieving duties. Im my last game, I had her, Anomen, and a Berserker 13 dualled into a Mage (who concentrated on spells that boosted combat abilities).

The party rocked the casbah.



BTW, the fact that you compare anything in BG to Pokemon just makes everything else suck. Nevermind.

Meh. I like bigger groups. More character interaction. ^_^

Besides, I like all the characters, I wanna have as many of em with me as possible.

I like big groups. Someone has to soak up the damage in a fight and carry all of my loot.

But can't you just CLUA yourself the item numbers bag04, ring31 and you'll be set... :devil:

I'm torn between 4 and 6 characters. Smaller = far easier to manage, especially during long hikes through several area transitions. Larger = more interaction + inventory space. The inventory space is an important consideration since I avoid containers like the plague (too many mods calling HasItem in baldur.bcs).

I did recently mod myself a solution to the management problem. Innate "Party Dimension Door" spell that re-"memorizes" itself when cast (even when interrupted). No need to wait for the party to catch up to Player1 when you can summon them instantly (yes, it's faster than CTRL-J).

The reason I love BG/BG2 and their predecessors is the number of people you can have in a party. I'd rather level up more slowly but have six in the gang. It's also the reason I can't get into NWN.

But now that you've described the fun of having a trio, what would you recommend as a first-time trio? I'll just have to try it, maybe even by resorting to multi-party saved into single player mode to get the classes, skills and stats for maximum clobbering. It would help to know what set of three characters may just get their butts kicked out of Amn before they even reach the Copper Coronet.

I was thinking of a thief dualed to fighter, a fighter dualed to cleric and a sorcerer who should be able to blam out spells at level 15 before we've left D'Arnise Hold, maybe? The thief can dual immediately because all he/she needs the thieving for is to find traps and disarm them or open locks, which a starter-thief does easily in BG2. The fighter-cleric would also level up quickly because he/she would also dual immediately, but with five slots for Crom Faeyr.

Or maybe a thief-fighter, a cleric-mage and the third place open for all the sub-quests, and later for Immy, perhaps.

Now that you mention it, I downloaded Level 1 NPCs but I haven't used it yet. I have also previously played The Darkest Day, which offers all those additional classes, or is that not the same as class altering? I suppose I could change a lot of stuff in Shadowkeeper as well. I currently use SK to give Imoen a bit more than her ridiculously low strength, but just about nothing else.

Well, technically the class altering mod is one that alters the class restrictions and rules of the game. Such as Allowing all classes to use whatever weapon they wish if they are strong enough(Ashes to Embers, Level 1 NPCs, BG2Tweakpack :unsure: ) armor restrictions like mages able to cast spells in heavy armor with spell failure rate, new and different spell selection (and additional kits) for clerics(divine remix) etc. many many more.

I remember playing a game with a Dwarf F/T, taking only Anomen and Kelsey. That was another ass-kickin' small party. The game got too easy too fast.


EDIT: I just realized this party I played a long time ago is very similar in concept to Pokemon boys. Neat!

Ok. Thief dualled to fighter is good. I recommend getting a Swashbuckler and dualling him at level 10 oe 11, whivever one gets you the +1 to AC and thac0. This means you will get a total bonus of 3 to AC and Thaco practically for free, a must have.

As for the fighter/cleric, go with anomen OR a tweaked Shapeshifter druid. If you do want the fighter, then dual a berserker into a cleric. Good dual. Or go for the ranger/cleric class for fighter skills AND ranger and druid spells. Hello Iron skin and fire elementals!

Finally, you don't need a sorcerer, just good old Edwin Odesseiron. And you're set.

Use skeleton warriors or your shapeshifted druid to fight mages with the MR. When Edwin reaches a high level, just shapeshift into a mindflayer then cast time stop and suck people's brains out. Instant death. Fun fun fun!

I tend to go to extremes. Usually I have 6 man parties ; or I have a Solo.

Most of my double or trio parties start out fine but I get tired of them very quickly.
From experience though, until you have infinite shooting weapons its very hard to manage 6, I generally try not to have more than 3 melee characters in my party (except at the beginning of the game, of course, where they're all weak)

If you have good weaponry (no issues about Enemy being Immune to Weapon) and infinite ammo and decent AC/Thac0 on EVERY SINGLE character, it is very fun :) you literally tear into groups and yes, even the lousy Standard Attack AI will shred the computer. Your only decision to control is what weapon your characters hold, and occasionally move the getting-hit-often or pretty-much-surrounded person out of the mess.

eg. In Unseeing Eye quest I accidentally wandered into the group of Blind Priests while chasing a Gauth with my main character (who had balduran shield). I Ctrl-Jed my party to behind my main character (not into the middle of the priests), I had 2 missile shooters, 1 Warhammer wielder, and 2 double-weapon wielding character, plus my main character with Celestial Fury. I found that despite the priests getting off many more spells than they would if I had bothered to surprise them properly (backstab, fireball, blah blah), and summoning a lot of creatures, my party shredded them all without batting an eyelid. I only did a bit of targetting here and there.

I've never been one for small groups. Like Zyraen, I tend to either go with a full party or go solo. I tried a three character party once, but I got bored after a while and decided to throw in the first three joinable NPCs that I ran into.

No, I don't have those mods but I'll check them out.

Maybe I'll start my PC with the Lion Warrior kit that Vilkacis made for me. I think it was Jarno Mikkola who mentioned that this character shapeshifted into lion form would start ToB with AC of -18 or -19, which sounds useful. The Lion Warrior is a Ranger kit. I haven;lt played it very far yet.
