In the same vein as SConrad's recent posts, here's a poll for one of my favourite games by Bioware--Jade Empire!

For me, there were so many characters I liked it's hard to choose just one--but I think The Black Whirlwind takes the cake.

Dawn Star, Interesting character and storyline. I found her Closed Path more interesting then Silk Fox and Sky

I actually think that all NPCs in Jade Empire were fairly good.

I agree with SC, but I think I'd go with Dawn Star, if someone asked me. I love childhood relationships, I guess. Still, all the characters are great, in their own way.

Went with Silk Fox, though I generally don't understand what about this particular character appeals to me.
"What do you do when there is an evil that your justice cannot defeat? Do you continue as you are, and allow the evil to fester? Or do you embrace one evil to defeat an evil greater still?"

"I used to dislike the idea of an unfair universe. Then I got to thinking: what if we did deserve all the awful things that happened to us, and didn't deserve any of the good? Suddenly, I found myself taking comfort in the thought of an inherently hostile and unfair universe."

Good to see some votes in this poll--I thought Jade Empire was an excellent game, and I'm glad others seem to have liked it too. :)

Of course. It's really under appreciated as a game, I feel. In fact, this thread moved me to load up one of my half-finished saves again. It's just as beautiful as I remember. :)

And I'd forgotten how much I love Wild Flower.

(And am I correct in hearing Imoen's voice as some of the little children throughout the game?)

One of my favorite games next to BG series. The only thing I didn't like are those damned cannibal caves I have to go through every time. So tiring, and so creepy.

And I'll have to go with Henpecked Hou and Kang the Mad. No one complains like the two of them when called to battle.

I thought the NPCs were excellent. I'm not even sure I've got a favourite, since they're all good. If I could pick one non-joinable NPC as well, it would have to be Sir Roderick.

Heh. No option for Sir Ponce von Fondlebottom The Magnificent Bastard? I mean... Why not? :)

It's close, this one. A lot of the NPC's in JE were well done, but The Black Whirlwind, Kang, and Hou were my favourites. If forced to make a choice... Black Whirlwind. At first sight, a very simple, straightforward character, but he still had quite some depth. Not to mention his stories were hilarious.

Sagacious Zu, for his haunted past and moment of redemption.

It's really under appreciated as a game, I feel.

Yes, it was. Jade Empire is one of the few games I've played all the way through more than once. Jade Master mode was really frustrating at first, until I got the strategy down. Now it's the only way I play. Everything else just seems too easy.

I thought most of the NPCs were frankly dull, one-dimensional and cliched beyond belief. I wouldn't have been particularly bothered had they all been thrown into a nice big volcano.

Not one seemed to be vaguely realistic, all had one-note personalities with little to no depth, and the humour was painfully unsophisticated, childish and unfunny. It was a pity, because it was a really interesting setting, something completely new, which was let down by a crap predictable story (the Ye Olde Bioware Rinse 'N' Repeat Story) with flat uninspired NPCs.

I agree that the story was rather predictable, but Rinse 'N' Repeat? The only element I can think of that it had in common with other Bioware stories was a betrayal by a close personal acquaintence. It's not as if they simply copied and pasted the story from one of their other games into this one, like when they took Neverwinter Nights into space to create Knights of the Old Republic. Seriously, compare those two storylines and try to tell me they're not identical.

Getting back to the characters, the only ones I thought were really one dimensional were Whirlwind, Hou, and maybe Kang. The others, in my opinion, weren't so much one dimensional as they were consistent.
