Also, I'll gladly take any suggestions on strategies and/or class choices.

Oh, squiggly line in my eye fluid. I see you lurking there on the periphery of my vision. But when I try to look at you, you scurry away. Are you shy, squiggly line? Why only when I ignore you, do you return to the center of my eye? Oh, squiggly line, it's alright, you are forgiven.

To my remembrance, there is no patches that are required, as the game works wonderfully all on it's own. Although here is the v1.03 patch. There are quite few mods, but you might try the original game first, for example in here.

Now, I would go with a Soldier class for the first walkthrough. Do not use your Feats for Melee Weapon Focus or Specialization, let's just say you'll get better weapons later. You might want to take Two-weapon Fighting and the improved versions instead even if you don't use two weapons at first.

You'll want the 1.03b patch for KotoR1. For any KotoR 1 game I recommend Allronix's Dialog Pack which adds dialogue options with most of the NPCs and in several situations. If you're playing a male character, the Bastila Romance Enhancement is certainly worth installing. The Bortherhood of Shadow mod is popular, though the version (1.02 )I used was somewhat buggy. It adds a new character and some new quests for the game, if you install all of it. There's a lot of new clothing and appearance mods available, too many for me to list :).

As for strategies, a soldier is a good first option. I don't recommend leveling up very far, since you will be getting a chance to go into another class later. The main weakness is poor skills - it really helps to be good at persuading people, and that probably means Scoundrel early on. Go for melee weapon feats over anything ranged, and take those feats to the end rather than spreading out. The game recommends one or two "levels" in feats, which is a really bad idea - it's better to be really good at one thing than mediocre at everything. Toughness is helpful too, but there aren't many other feats that are more than mediocre most of the time.

Back from the brink.

Like RPGs? Like Star Wars? Think combining the two would be fun? Read Darths and Droids, and discover the line "Jar Jar, you're a genius".

These, in the day when heaven was falling,
The hour when earth's foundations fled,
Followed their mercenary calling
And took their wages and are dead.

I always go for scoundrel or scout. They get so many more feats. I really prefer the scout, but the lack of Diplomacy(and Open Lock if you don't want Mission) hurts a bit. The computer splicing is nice though. Scouts will always be my favorite.

I can't suggest a mod or patch, because I have the Xbox version, and have thus, not used either.

That's skill points, the soldier gains the most feats. -_-

Always install the latest patch. I wouldn't install too many mods on your first play-through--the game is definitely good enough to be enjoyed without them. :)

As for class, they're all good in their own ways. I'd go with Scout or Scoundrel--the Scout's automatic implant feats are valuable, and Flurry/Rapid Shot are (IMO) the best combat feats in the game. The Scoundrel's extra AC and other feats (Sneak Attack, Critical Strike/Sniper Shot) are useful too, though. Although the Soldier's extra feats and vitality points are nice, Power Attack/Power Shot are just not that good, and the low skills are drawbacks too.

I always go for a scout, myself. Flurry/rapid shot from the start is one less feat I have to get, ditto implant. And really, there's not that many feats I find worth grabbing as a soldier, so those tend to go to waste.
