In KotOR I, I've always had the impression that the Sentinel is just a class somewhere in-between the Soldier and Sentinel, but never really having it's own niche to kick some butt in. Is this true? Or are there some strengths to the class I haven't thought of?

I'm interested in the class because I want more Force Points to use my powers than I'm used to with my Guardian, but I still want to be a pretty good fighter. I don't like how my Consulars stink in combat (I've always leaned towards fighters in D&D).

I have very recently realized just how much I love using HK-47, and I'd like to build a character who can repair him. This obviously points me towards a Scout. I'm kinda bored with Guardians, so I thought I might go for a Sentinel. Sentinels of course have the other bonus of 2 SP/level, which means there's actually a benefit for going over an 8 INT (I do powergame, just can't help it!). ;)

Anyway, please describe for me the strengths of the Sentinel class. I'd love to know! :)

Oh, squiggly line in my eye fluid. I see you lurking there on the periphery of my vision. But when I try to look at you, you scurry away. Are you shy, squiggly line? Why only when I ignore you, do you return to the center of my eye? Oh, squiggly line, it's alright, you are forgiven.

You've identified one of the major things yourself. It is an in-between class, that falls somewhere between a Consular and a Guardian in power. It does have some advantages over both, and some weaknesses.

Anyway, the best things about the Sentinel:

Toughness. The immunities aren't as flashy as the Guardian's Leap-Smite attacks, or as defining as the Consular's "Uber Force Powahz". But being immune to the most dangerous effects in the game isn't a bad thing. Since you've got pretty good VPs and high saves it's very rare for a Sentinel to be knocked out of a fight.

Versatility. It's not just that you've more skill points than other Jedi, you've got more interesting options in class skills. A Sentinel should be much more versatile and have more options than another Jedi, so they can take more than one approach to a problem. Other jedi classes generally have one way to do something, unless their other class provides some advantages. A sentinel might have several, depending on what you've made of the class.

I really like the class. You aren't far behind a Guardian in fighting ability - on my normal progression with 15 Jedi levels it's two feats. Your BAB is lower and you have a few less VPs, but I rarely find myself missing often by the time it's significant. I don't think you suffer too much compared to the Consular with force powers, until you get to the higher levels, but the Consular is IMO the most powerful class in the game. A Sentinel will have more options than a Consular most of the time, and certainly more than a Guardian.

Back from the brink.

Like RPGs? Like Star Wars? Think combining the two would be fun? Read Darths and Droids, and discover the line "Jar Jar, you're a genius".

These, in the day when heaven was falling,
The hour when earth's foundations fled,
Followed their mercenary calling
And took their wages and are dead.
