Heehee. Kinda accidentally.

Surely you know, chainmail is a pain-in-the-ass to draw properly in detail; I was trying to use shiny low-detail bling bling curves to just pretend it was chainmail, but the contrast didn't go right the first time; it looked crap, so I grabbed the dreaded color-ruining lighten/darken/dodge/burn/thingy tool, and set myself to increasing contrast in hopes of hiding the actual lack of detail.
I had not expected that it'd bring out the dark rust-red that I'd used a base color though, so I copied the worst burnt area onto another layer, dropped the saturation, and put the layer as a... hmm, now what was that setting again.
Afraid I merged the layers afterwards, so I can't ceck it up now. :P

Great avatar! I've got a question though. Have you used more shading on your current avatar pic than the original coloured version? Because the avatar looks much better to me! (a bit more dark and much better shading) Hope it's not my paranoid mind again. lol

Your mind is quite right on this one Silinde, I did add a few additional shading and highligh layers for the avatar version, figured it'd be better to diminish unnecessary details for a scaled down version. :]

And thanks! :]

Well, i greatly prefer your avatar version! Even if you added "a few" additional shading and highligh layers, it's my personal view that it raised the pic MUCH more. The skulls seem more natural and even the small ones in the red part have great shading witch negates the only somewhat weak point of the original pic. I always loved Necromancers!

True enough, I agree; there just is something more 'artistic' about using more free-hand tools and less layers and effects. I'm hoping to some day be able to achieve the effect without using effect layers. :P

Here's a background for a coloring thingy I'm doing for a dude elsewhere:

It's supposed to be kinda humorous; a heart shaped mushroom cloud.
It looked kinda phallic at first, but I think I've mostly managed to wipe that look off.

Well, actually, I just think you should first learn to work without it; definition and detail are essential base skills. Blur is just a fancy effect to be added on top of them.
Blurriness usually works best with light effects and moving objects. Blurriness usually looks like crap in static scenes (the above is not a static scene, there's a freakin nuke going off .p), static scenes then would be buildings and architechture, pavements, still objects

Also note; I did not use the effect there, it's just natural blurriness from applying the very brightest final highlights with a soft brush.
And, well, yes, lack of detail, since in the real piece, a lot of the ground area there will be covered by a female in fancy sci-fi armor. .p

So, here's the finalized picture from the previous post; had to first get permission from the guy who did the lineart to post it; I only did the background and the colors.
And the lineart is by the brilliant Shimmering-Sword. :)

Damn. I'll have to borrow other people's linearts more often... Inspires me to color better. .p

Oh yeah, and here's a sketch of a widely abhorred douchebag:

Nice work WeeR! I see you managed to achieve a great lightening effect on the girl! And you've picked wonderful warm colours for the background!

Zoom helps you to paint detail, but without a big enough picture with space enough for detail, you can't really paint detail either. .p
