Okay, this month I received a bonus book from my book club. It was the Discworld graphic novels, which is the first two novels. I loved it and I want to read more of the books. What order should I read and which ones should I shouldn't miss?

You have to read Witches Abroad. IMO opinion its by far the funniest (though not the best).

Reading order doesn't matter too much. I'd advise reading the early ones first, and hold off on the most recent ones until later.

Unmissables are Witches Abroad (and the rest of the Witches series, Wyrd Sisters, Lords & Ladies, Maskerade, Carped Jugulum), Feet Of Clay, The Fifth Elephant, Reaper Man, Hogfather, Monstrous Regiment, the Last Continent, Gong Postal, and Thud. Most of them then :P

There's a good suggested reading order guides (with diagrams!) here at L-Space.

Available for several languages, too.

(Note that they haven't added "Making Money" to the guide yet. It should be read only after "Going Postal".)

I knew there was a reason I kept this around.

You need to read the Watch books. Sam Vimes is awesome. Also, Death, because he's also awesome. I'm less fond of the Witches, personally.

...my PNG version is superior to their JPG version anyway. *hmph*

You can't go wrong, really. Might as well start at the beginning with The Colour of Magic. Soul Music is one of my favourites, but I can't say it's above and beyond better than any of the others, since they're all pretty good. I've even enjoyed the 'Young Adult' (Wee Free Men etc.). books. The style is not substantially different from the other Discworld books, except the main character is younger than his usual characters.

I wonder how young those "young adults" are supposed to be. "The Amazing Maurice" is the kind of stuff that would give kids nightmares. Probably more so than most of the regular Discworld stuff...

Seriously? I read fairy tales when I was a kid. The kind where the Evil stepmother in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves has to dance in red hot glowing iron slippers to her death at the end, and where the Evil "Witch" in "Rapunzel" goes without punishment (she wasn't really evil, just disapproving), while Rapunzel is sent away, and ends up giving birth in a desert, while the Prince falls down into the thorns, getting blinded by them, and has to wander the world, until he finally found Rapunzel again, and her tears gave him sight again.

And those were the ones with the *happy* endings.

"The Amazing Maurice" is harmless, compared to that.

I think Pratchett himself had a line about that sort of thing in one of the books. Things like red-hot iron slippers are just fine and dandy provided you put them on someone who deserves them. Horribly poisoning cute, innocent and very undeserving rodents, on the other hand, not so much.

You definitely shouldn't miss "Guards!Guards!". It was the first Discworld novel I've read and IMHO the best, though I haven't read them all, yet. Also other books from Watch Novels are great, and I'd recomend Death Novels, too, especially "Mort". Death is one of my favourite characters. :)

I think you should keep the order of reading only within the "miniseries", if you want to read something from different series, ie. from Witches Novels and later from Watch Novels, you don't have to worry about their order too much.

I've toyed with the concept of making an NPC out of someone like Foul Ole Ron. The soundset would be pretty easy - you'd just have to have him spout random gibberish like "Buggerit" and "Millennium hand and shrimp."

That would be very interesting. :D I'd like to play it.
I've played long time ago in BG2 multiplayer with whole party created as a Night Watch and written notes in my journal in Carrot's letters style. It was fun.

Heh, maybe you should make a mod item out of the journal :D.

Foul Ole Ron would have a familiar in the form of Gaspode, his "thinking brain" dog. Most coherent conversation with Ron would take place via the dog rather than via Ron himself. But if the PC were struck by insanity or the like, he (or she) might suddenly be able to have a vary coherent conversation with Ron. The dog would have a soundset consisting of clips like "Woof bloody woof" and the like.

Ron would also have an innate ability to conjure a creature known as his Smell, an entity which has been around so long it's acquired a personality of its own and has even been known to attend classy parties and the like independently of Ron. It would be sort of like a wandering Stinking Cloud.

Another interesting NPC would be Casanunda, the dwarf swashbuckler who shaves his beard and wears a wig, and the Discworld's self-proclaimed greatest liar and second greatest lover (under the notion that whoever's in first place isn't trying as hard). He carries a stepladder as an essential prop to his lovemaking activities, and would be romanceable by females of any race.
