I have to ask this. With all the excitement over the new Fallout 3 coming out, I have to know. What is so great about Fallout? I tried playing the first one and I couldn't even get into it. It was slow and tedious at times. I never played the second one since I was told the controls and set up was the same. What was so great about it that it still makes fan boys (and girls) wet themselves in anticipation?

I have yet to meet a single Fallout fan who's happy about Fallout 3. I have, however, met quite a few Fallout fans who have devised very... inspired... things they wish to do to the primary staff at Bethesda.

Fan excitement about F3? True fans don't like Fallout 3. Not at all. This true fan just hates the idea of Oblivion with Guns.

I tried playing the first one and I couldn't even get into it. It was slow and tedious at times.

Your experience with the game changes, when you play the game... as in if you play it only an hour, you can't get inside combat mechanics, and the RPG elements. If you had went through the game, you would have been able to see them, or most of them. Now, to speed up the game, you need to set the settings to the top(the enemy combat speed), and still you'll still not miss anything. At first it's a bit tedious I know, having slain the rats few dozen times(with the knife,
Spoiler
) but after when the world opens up, and you have gone through Vault 15... you'll be much more ready to face the world. :whistling:

And of course there is the option to go through the game without killing anybody, or anything(at least in combat) ... but that's for the nerds.

What our resident Shoulder Devil said, with an emphasis on the last line.

Also, Meatdog. And the Easter eggs. And Harold.

And the whole game. Seriously, give it a chance. It is great.

EDIT: I forgot something. DEATHCLAWS! Most people find them quite terrifying, but I just think they're cute, and look huggable. And they look like they want to hug, with arms that long. I want a Deathclaw plushie, and I'd huggle him and cuddle him and call him George. ^_^ You can read more about them here.

Seriously, I hope they will sell Deathclaw plushies. I wuv them. ^_^

Once you get over the fact that combat is turn-based and everything is just so brown, Fallout is awesome. I much prefer the second game (not being able to manipulate party members' inventories in the first game is a pain - it's shorter - and the characterisation in the second is better). It's just full of humour.

I`m a Fallout fan and I`m happy about Fallout 3. :)

The greatest thing about it is that it`s being made. I love the universe and I`m glad the IP hasn`t been abandoned.

I'm a Fallout fan too, and I don't hate Fallout 3. I'll wait until I play it until I form an opinion. And even that opinion may change over time, as has for so often. Take my favourite game of all time, "LOOM". When I first played it, I liked it, but it was nothing special. These days, I think it's one of the best games ever, and it is very special. I love it.

NWN 1 was another story. These days I like it a lot, but when I first played it, it could hardly measure up to what I had been playing before that (Baldur's Gate 2. ^_^ ). These days I see the advantages of both games, and like them for them.

So, until I play, I will just be my optimistic self and say everything will be fine, one way or another. Oh, and I'm hoping they really release a plush Deathclaw one day. ^_^

Well you go enjoy playing that Oblvion mod called Fallout with Swords.

Me, I'll stick with the true Fallout games. Myself and other fanatics wouldn't be so bitter if they took the course of staying true to the first Fallouts, and me, on a personal level, believes it should only be made by those who actually worked on the first Fallout games.

Well I plan on playing Fallout 3. Once I get a new PC. I loved Morrowind. Haven't played Oblivion yet as my current PC doesn't have enough RAM. I really should get off my backside and get the new PC, eh?

Seconded. I mean, when they threaten to launch Baldur's Gate III, BG-fans get grumpy.

Fallout-fans, well... they threaten to overthrow the global society with fury and lots of big guns :P

Fallout has it's special atmosphere and it's very unlikely it could be repeated in 3D. Fans usually keep clinging to what they like and any undesired change has a good chance of being welcomed with a gunfire. It doesn't matter whether or not a new game is actually bad, it's just different and thus can't be called the same name. The logic here is lucid.

Yep. Like those musician guys who changed both their style and singer and are still calling themselves Nightwish. But let's not go off topic further. I don't know how I'd explain why the Fallout games are so great, but Oblivion with guns? No, thanks, not my type of fun. If they wanna make monies just on the name "Fallout", they get a no-no from me.

I'm with Icen on this one, and I think between us we have more castings of Imprisonment per day than scrolls of freedom exist in the world, Vicen. :) Seriously, why can't people let honored giants that have said their peace enjoy a quiet and well-earned retirement? Also thinking Diablo 3 in this category.

Hmm. I guess I really don't care whether they ruin a franchise or not (read further before you kill me over this statement). I mean that in the the sense that if they make BG3 for example, and it sucks, then as far as I'm concerned it just never happened. It really isn't important to me. I still love Starwars even though 90% of the franchise sucks, and I just choose to ignore that which does.

I'll be happy if they decide to BGIII, because there is a chance of it being good, just as I'm happy for Fallout 3. If I feel they're bad or stay untrue to their titles, I'll just throw them aside and that's that.

So, of course I'll be very disappointed if they made a crappy BGIII, but I'd rather they tried and failed than not try at all.

BGIII = Star Wars Epsiode 1. Leave well alone!

I'll give Fallout 3 a shot as I like Elder Scrolls and have a lot of respect for Bethesda, but I need a new PC first. Hmm, and I still haven't played Oblivion... But no, I don't expect it'll be "the same" as the old Fallout games. Different setting (Washington, not California - funny that, given Bethesda are in Maryland) and so forth, so it's not like they can screw up the old lore.
