I am trying to install Planescape-Torment on XP SP 3. I have sound accel off, hardware accel down one notch, seems to start and run OK.

I would like to apply the three tweaks found here, Fix, Tweak, and UB.

I downloaded, then followed instructions for the first, the Fixpack. Used 7-Zip to unpack into the main directory, which for install is: D:\Black Isle\Planescape - Torment

This creates a folder D:\Black Isle\Planescape - Torment\pstfixpack. Inside it is a folder PST-fix, and three Setup files, an exe, a debug, and a tp2.

If I run the SetupPST_fix.exe in this folder, it errors out immediately:
ERROR: Unable to find DIALOG.TLK in:
dialog.tlk

Please run this program in your Infinity Engine gam

FATAL ERROR: Failure("Unable to find DIALOG.TLK")

If I move the three file up one level into the main directory for the game, I am asked for language, I enter zero, then I get errors. It also appears to have created a folder PST-Fix, where it intended to backup files.

Below is the debug file info. Note the section:
Possible HD/CD Path: [D:\TData\]
Possible HD/CD Path: [D:\TData\]
Possible HD/CD Path: [D:\TData\]
Possible HD/CD Path: [D:\TData\]

This install is from the two CD edition I just purchased. I followed suggestion I found to copy all files from CD two to harddrive, then edit the above. I have tried originally with the first entry still pointing to CD1:=F:\CD1\, and only 2,3,4 CD locations pointing to hard drive. then with above. Same errors occur. This is with CD two in the F: drive where I left it while trying to start the game at least through intro movies to the main menu.

If I am going about doing the install wrong, I would appreciate an assist. Thanks.

I copied the PST-Fix folder as unzipped inside the pstfixpack folder up to the root of the game folder, and ran the .exe in the root, and the fix appears to have been appied successfully. It was a result of how 7-Zip was unpacking the contents into a folder in the root folder of the game.

Glad you sorted it. I too noticed the problem you had, once the rar/zip is extracted (to game folder) the Read me suggests that you should just run the installer, but as the archive is packed within another folder this will not work - the contents needs to be moved up a level.

Crap!! Crap crap crap. Yer right. It shouldn't be that way. My apologies.

I can't take care of it right now, holiday things going on, but when I come back I'll do a mini-update that repackages it the way it was supposed to (and might as well kill that Dustman issue while I'm at it).

Not a problem, it baffled me till I thought it through and tried the obvious.

I bought Planescape and Icewind Dale treo of games for my wife, who loves Baldurs Gate I and II, Oblivion, and similar games. She had researched and decided these sounded likely candidates.

I managed to get Planescape to run on her superfast modern XP with an nVidia 512 MB card by turning off sound hardware acceleration completely, and notching video hardware accel down one notch. If you lowered the video too far, the mouse started to leave trails, screen could not repaint. Hopefully it will work, we shall see.

But the attempt to put the Icewind Dale games was a total, heartless disaster. Even with accel off on sound and video, and Win 98 compatibility set, it would either launch, but you could not start a game, it would crash to small black rectangle in upper left of screen and you had to kill the task; or in Win 93 compat mode, it just blanked/blacked the entire screen, and it was a task requiring patience to get the task manager to come up and kill.

Fortunately for her, I retained my final Win98 SE clean build on a Pentium III with 759MB RAM on a nice Super Micro board. I just fired it up, installed the first Dale, and it fired up just fine.

Why have a couple boxes of old games if you can't play them again someday? How nostalgic to fire up that Win98 machine. It can still even authenticate to the Active Directory domain I run on our network at home, but I don't think I will be driving it out on the Internet anymore.

:)

Have a great holiday season!

If I start the fix pack installation I get the same 'undefined string' errors as the OP and anything but quiting installation fails. What's wrong?

I downloaded it from here: http://www.shsforums...mp;showfile=647

And then I extracted the Setup-PST-Tweak.exe and Setup-PST-Tweak.tp2 files to my Torment directory and ran the exe.

I'm running windows xp professional 64-bit if it matters.

I got exactly the same problem as above mentioned....no matter from which folder I try to extract and run pstfixpack, I'm always told that it can't find dialog.tlk.
I'd be thankful if anybody could help me with this...

Sorry, I missed this thread earlier. :(

And then I extracted the Setup-PST-Tweak.exe and Setup-PST-Tweak.tp2 files to my Torment directory and ran the exe.

You can't just extract those two files. You have to extract the full content of the .rar files.

After extracting pstfixpack.rar, you should have a folder called C:\Program Files\Black Isle\Torment\PST-Fix. That's with the 4CD version anyway, the 2CD version may have a different base directory, but that should give you the general idea. If you don't have that folder, you extracted in the wrong place.

Generally, I just put the rar files in the Torment directory, right click on it and hit "Extract Here".

i was running into the same trouble here, with the undefined string. i extracted into my C:\Program Files\Black Isle\Planescape - Torment\ directory. the trouble, it turned out, was the folders were being extracted, but not the contents. once i manually installed the contents, everything worked fine.
