Hey everyone. I completed Fahrenheit - Indigo Prophecy again the other night. Damn that's a quality game. It made me want to hop around in the land of Adventure Games some more. Trouble is, I don't know that many in the genre, and most of the good ones I do know have hopelessly outdated graphics.

So, my question is: Can you help me find an adventure game that'd suit me? In short I'm looking for something:

1) With a deep, involving story

2) Without insanely hard puzzles

3) Without totally outdated graphics (which means it probably has to have been released in 2002+)

The games of this type that I've played and enjoyed are Fahrenheit - Indigo Prophecy and Dreamfall - The Longest Journey.

Thanks in advance people!

PS. I was thinking about The Moment of Silence. Anybody know if it's any good?

Awesome games, I still need to finish the first Longest journey. You might like Psychonauts . It's funny and very interesting in that "What the hell is wrong with you?" way. This site has a list of some good games. The ending of Indigo Prophecy took me forever to beat the one guy with all the switching buttons.

Moment of silence is a great, so yes it's good. Syberia, Syberia II are fine games. Then there are Runaway: A Road Adventure, Runaway The Dream of the Turtle :)

Thanks. Psychonauts look interesting, even though I'm probably going to go for something more serious initially. The site you provided is great!

Runaway, and especially Syberia, look very interesting! I found these games while reading about the former two:

Sinking Island

Paradise

Anyone know if they're good?

Paradise feels like a clone of Syberia - except for the surroundings. The dreamy atmosphere is just the same and the story similar. But if you play Syberia and like it (and I can't see a reason why you shouldn't like such a great game :P ), you'll like Paradise too.

As for Sinking Island, it looks very, very interesting. The problem was my crappy videocard couldn't manage to run the game.

And you simply must play The Black Mirror. It's a Czech game (shameless promotion of my nation here), but it's been released in English and I think I've never seen such absorbing mystery atmosphere in a game before. And the ending is just... mmm. I couldn't sleep until I finished it :)

Then there is Nibiru, made by the same team that made The Black Mirror. Feels like a crossover between Broken Sword and Indiana Jones - a very enjoyable game. But still, I liked The Black Mirror better :)

The Black Mirror definetely looks cool, I'll definetely try that, but Nibiru seems to have got a lot of bad reviews.

Beyond Good And Evil is an excellent, albeit fairly obscure, adventure game. Don't know why it isn't more widely known than it is, but it's well worth playing.

"The righteous need not cower before the drumbeat of human progress. Though the song of yesterday fades into the challenge of tomorrow, God still watches and judges us. Evil lurks in the datalinks as it lurked in the streets of yesterday, but it was never the streets that were evil." - Sister Miriam Godwinson, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri

If you want deep involving story, The Longest Journey is a Must. There's a continuation in Dreamfall: The Longest Journey but while it's good, it can't compare (although it is a must if you want to know what happens next).

I'm not a very patient man, sadly. I play adventure-games for immersion, depth and story (which is why I like movie-type games such as Fahrenheit so much - you can kick back and half watch half play the game, with a mate by your side), not for the puzzles. I tried The Longest Journey and liked it, but the puzzles became too much, and I had to quit.

I considered it, but the reviews threw me off.

You can always check www.adventuregamers.com (also known as my Head Quarters in ruling humanity, and Internet home) if you want to ask directly in the "scene". ;)

I think the reason why Paradise might seem like a clone of Syberia is because both games are by Benoit Sokal. :P As for the Syberia games, they are good. But I always found that there was too little to *do* in the areas. Only the objects you would actually need for solving of puzzles can be interacted with. The areas are beautiful to look at, but many times I would have liked Kate's opinion on something unrelated to the puzzles.

The Black Mirror definetely looks cool, I'll definetely try that, but Nibiru seems to have got a lot of bad reviews.

About Black Mirror: If you understand German well enough, you should get the German version of the game. Normally I don't go for the German versions, but rather English (since usually that's the original language. But this game is Czech originally, so that's alright), but in this case it was a good choice. You see, the voice acting in the English version is not very good, and there's actually a point where you can accidentally get stuck without a way out, which has been removed in the English version.

If you don't speak German well enough, you can still get the English version. Just be sure to save before using the gun, as you need *both* bullets in it, and if you waste one, then you'll be dead, okay (you'll know what I mean when you reach the point)?

If you want deep involving story, The Longest Journey is a Must. There's a continuation in Dreamfall: The Longest Journey but while it's good, it can't compare (although it is a must if you want to know what happens next).

I second that. You *have* to play The Longest Journey.

Also, a very interesting game is Pathologic - the graphics are not the best (but alright), but the gameplay and concept are simply amazing. Here's a screenshot from the game:

Psychonauts is incredibly fun, though I should point out that it is partly jump and run too. But don't worry, it's not too hard, and story and jump and run components are expertly balanced. But we expected no less from Tim Schäfer, after all. ^_^

Speaking of Tim Schäfer, try and get your hands on "Grim Fandango". One of the greatest games ever, even if it is a bit older (still, the graphics hold up very well).

Broken Sword 1 and 2 are still great, and their graphics held up rather well (cartoon).

Also, I think you shouldn't do off with the older games yet. Especially if you get them for free (legally): Go to the ScummVM Website and you can download one of the greatest games ever (also by the guys who made the "Broken Sword" games), "Beneath a Steel Sky"! It's completely legal and approved by Revolution Studios. You'll need ScummVM to run it, but don't worry, it's free as well.

Also, if you're feeling like playing some nice free adventure games, you can always visit the AGS Website (AGS being "Adventure Game Studio", a free engine for making Adventure games.

Some great games I can recommend are:

5 Days A Stranger
(As well as the sequels. Together they are known as the John DeFoe series.: 7 Days A Skeptic
Trilby's Notes
6 Days A Sacrifice) all by Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw

*Two of a Kind by Dave Gilbert

*Spooks by The Ivy

*Mind's Eye ProgZmaz - This one is excellent. Even if it's pixel graphics (though really good ones), I think you will love this. It is absolutely awesome, and well done.

*Emily Enough: Imprisoned by Logan - Excellent game with very wicked humour.

The Ben Jordan: Paranormal Investigator series by Grundislav Games is overall great. The first cases might seem a bit silly, but with every case they improve, and get more serious. When playing Case 4 "Horror at Number 50", I seriously got scared towards the end. Really well done!

The Apprentice series by Herculean Effort can only be recommended. Excellent!

Principles of Evil: Volume I and Principles of Evil II: Misery Loves Company are great and fun games. Play them. (Also, the doll makers are kind of fun I discovered. Also, I think the Fantasy Car Breeder is the most awesome thing ever. ^_^ )

Now, for the last game. First of all, the game is great. It is fun, it is hilarious, and I think everyone should play it. Please remember that I said that, and keep it in mind when looking at the graphics (which are intentionally as eclectic as they are, I believe. :P ): Jessica Plunkenstein and the Düsseldorf Conspiracy. (Also, their next game "The Judgement of Quintus" looks to be good once its released.).

Find a hint for that one little problem and move on. The story is too good to just give up :) I don't know how far did you get in game but I can think of only two very difficult puzzles in it and I'll admit, I used the walkthrough to get on with the story. But it's such a good story

This ?bug? was in the original Czech version as well. You had to reload and reload until you hit the stupid wolf.

It was indeed. It was only in the German version they made sure it didn't happen.

But really, the main reason why I'd suggest playing the German version over the English version is the voice acting. Of course, if you understand Czech, the original version should be an even better option. :)

Ah, the rubber ducky. I actually had no problem with that, since they solved that puzzle in the preview of the game in the game magazine I was reading. ^_^

I'm going to go ahead and recommend Syberia, Syberia II, the Longest Journey, and even Dreamfall (even though it's Longest Journey's sequel, it does differ a bit, there's more action, but I still consider it an adventure game).
Those aren't *that* hard, even *I* figured out the rubber ducky thing. Seriously, though, that is the least logical thing in the game, the rest flows pretty naturally, it goes with the story, so it's not rocket science. :P
I also recommend Grim Fandango which Jazhara7 already mentioned, it has a great story, awesome music, and a lovable orange demon (Glottis!!!!!!! ). If you manage to work out the few issues you might have running it on a newer machine (it's doable), it's totally worth it.

And Jazhara7... Great post!!! I think I picked up a few ideas for myself there!!! :D
And finally, because this can't be overstated... Yes, Longest Journey is a *must*.

Actually, in the original version there were quite a few characters voiced horribly  I haven't seen the English version though, and my German isn't good at all so I'm stuck with the original :)

And now you made me want to play it again. If only the day had at least 50 hours...

How about A Vampyre Story? My boyfriend played the demo (I haven't), and he liked it. It seems to be a classic adventure and some of the puzzles might be a bit difficult, but the atmosphere is good.

Nothing that the community hasn't adressed already. In this case, it's Quick & Easy.

For all your LucasArts game needs, The International House of Mojo is a good place to start. (Look under "Mixnmojo Hosted Site Community" on the right for the links to the other sites. :) )

I'm playing it right now. It's alright, though I am still in the castle (as in: Right at the beginning). I warn you, though. Mona's voice can be rather tedious to listen to (I never thought I'd have to say that about any character. But now I did.), because of its pitch.

Okay. Syberia was waaaaaay too slow-moving for me, sorry. I don't mind stories that take their time (in face, 90% of all computer-games move too fast), but this old-school adventure style is apparently a little too slow for my taste. I got to around the middle of chapter two, and thought it was a nice story with innovative touches... but ultimately too boring, I'm afraid :-/

So that kindda scares me away from other Sokal-games...

On my list is still:

The Moment of Silence

The Black Mirror

Not sure if I can judge the other games that was suggested in this thread. Are they as slow-moving as Syberia?

I was really hoping, based on Fahrenheit and Dreamfall, that adventure-games would be my new thing/genre. But as I read about them, most seems more tilted toward the slow-moving pace of Syberia, and less towards the advancement of the two former titles...

Thanks everybody for your suggestions though. It's always nice to try something new :)

And, of course, I have yet to try The Black Mirror and The Moment of Silence.
