So the problem is this... I've installed BG1 and BG2, the Trilogy, a few other mods, and when I start Baldur's Gate 2 I cannot save the game.
If I try saving the game (whether with quicksave or normal save), I get a message box saying "Save game failed, do you wish to quit?" If I quit, the game quits. I don't have to (the game doesn't crash), but the savegame is not created.

Can anyone help me with this one?

Thanks in advance.

If you googled on this, you'd come by this topic.
So maybe thats not exactly your case, but there are some hints (like checking your antivirus messes with it, and/or run game in win98 compatibility mode).

Googled and found that topic, however this is not my case. I have disabled all my antivirus and anti-spyware applications, and set the compatibility mode to Win98. Also tried running with WINE under Linux (Win98 compatibility mode); still to no avail.

Any other ideas? Thanks.

I had the same problem, once. My game didn't save. It happened only when I'd created a new character, but when I imported an existing .chr file, everything went fine. I know, this sounds strange, but worked for me.

OK, I seem to have pinpointed my problem, but I don't know how to solve it.
It seems that every time I try saving, if there is a default.tot file in the BG2/temp/ directory, the game won't save and will ask me to quit.

Setting the temp/ directory to read-only removes the message window, but the game still does not save.
Removing the default.tot file in the temp/ directory enables me to save, but only once. Under Windows I cannot do this, because Explorer says the file is being used. Under Linux I can delete the file, but I'd have to do so every time I try to save, otherwise the save will fail.

So, any leads here? Can anyone help me with this?

I did a reinstall. BG1 saves, BG2 saves, ToB saves. After installing some mods, it doesn't save anymore. I've installed a bunch of mods, and all are from the BiG Project, all marked as either Standard (most of them) or Tactic (a few), all found here. Most notably there are the Corrections, the Improvements, the BGT Trilogy, stores and items (both BG1 and BG2), some NPC mods, such as the BG1 NPC project (with music pack), the Edwin romance, Viconia friendship, Coran friendship, BG1 and BG2 rules and tweaks (excluding Ding0's quest pack), the BG2 rules, tweaks and spells (green only), BG2 Tweak Pack, Rogue Rebalancing, a few post-BP tweaks (green only, not all), the NPC portraits, Worldmap, Level 1 NPCs kit, Imoen romance and Widescreen mod.

This is what I can recall ATM. Any leads here? Thanks!

I haven't tried it, but you can try creating an empty directory called default.tot in the (BG)/temp directory. Discussion here (the last post):

Hi guys, I'm struggling with this issue on my new Vista laptop. When you say create 'empty directory' does that mean simply accessing the file via computer-program files-baldurs gate-temp and then just creating 'new folder' ?

Thanks for any help you can give a computer illiterate noob!

Well, you could do that, but I would recommend not to use the program files folder at all, but uninstall the whole game, then install it into the computers primary drives folder for example to C:/games/BG2 - SoA ...this is cause the Vista has a placed special protection on all the "program files" sub-direction's that really hard to bypass easily.
This and disabling the UAC will solve nearly all the problems the Vista throws at you.

In case the BG2 game crashes post the content of your baldur.err file. To get it to record stuff, open up the 'baldur.ini' in your game folder with Notepad, and under the [Program Options] section in the file, make a new line and type in 'Logging On=1' (without the '' quotes, unless the line is already there)... Save the file and exit. Now go back into the game and try to reproduce the crash. Then look in your game folder again for the Baldur.err file and open it with the Notepad to analyze its contents, or let us do it.

Well I am running the game on an xp with no mods, the latest patch, and a few bugfixes from baldurdash and I have the same thing happen about 50% of the time I do any save. The only difference is the save file IS created and the in game console says the save is successful. Not only that but this only just started about the time I reached suldenesselar! I played the rest of the game without any issues! It is really annoying and makes me worried that the save file is corrupted in some way. Other than that it doesn't seem to affect anything other than my patience. It did cause the game to crash once though when I clicked "no" when it asked me if I wanted to quit (the save file was still created that time despite the crash and in apparent working order when I reloaded). I am beginning to suspect that my anti-virus (symantec) is somehow responsible as this started happening right after it updated. Other than that I have no idea why this started to happen and I would really like to know how to make it stop happening.

It's a very good suspect, and if you know how, you really should turn that off, as when you'll be using modified game, you'll be using officially unsupported resources and your game is not certified to the Operation System in usage...
Besides why would you want to drain your computers power by making it check every bite it writes down while playing the game ? If your virus protection agent cannot do it previously and afterward the "damage is done", it's not actually protecting you, it's just draining the CPU.

Have you tried the fix mentioned above?
For some reason I don't have to do that anymore - it's been a while since I posted this question, so I'm not really sure what it really was. If I remember correctly, my fix was to make a default.tot folder inside the Baldur's Gate II\temp\ folder, in order to prevent BG2 from making such a file.
Don't ask me how or why, all I know is that it worked flawlessly after that.
Then again, we're on different operating systems - I haven't been using Windows (for everyday stuff) for more than five years now, so take all my Windows-related statements and advice cum grano salis.

I am beginning to suspect that my anti-virus (symantec) is somehow responsible as this started happening right after it updated.

Out ot sheer curiousity - if you're using Microsoft Windows, what is the reason for not using Microsoft's Antivirus? I've had very good experience with it, and people to whom I've suggested it have also claimed it's better than most. Just my 2 cents.

I dont use any mods at all yet i have the same problem. mostly with BG1. Occasionally with BG2. When the problems occured in BG2 i just shut my computer down and turned it back on later and it worked fine. Havent had a problem with BG2 or ToB (Played and beat both right after eachother) But now BG1 Is doing it and my method isnt working. How do i do the create a file thing and not uninstall either baldurs gate? Got to far in both to delete em. I would go crazy trying to get that far again.

Move your save files, reinstall in the correct area, move the saves back? Shouldn't be hard, especially if you don't have any mods.
