So, this isn't so much me asking for a quick solution to a problem, or, well, if you have a simple solution, well, I'll be more than happy to hear it. But anyway, it's more just me trying to figure out what the problem actually is about.

Now. The problem.

It's something of a general trend, something I've observed with many games over a longer period of time.
Everything starts out working just fine, rolling crash-free and smooth. This goes on usually for a few playthroughs.

But over time, the frequency of crashes and glitches keeps getting more intense.

Take Mass Effect 2 for instance. Everything started out fine, only problems I had were the occasional collision bugs where I'd get stuck to the ceiling or such.
Now, I can't rearrange my ability quickbar without a crash to desktop, and crashes in general are more frequent.
Also there's more and more graphics glitches where characters all of a sudden get stuck in the T-pose, or blink about during cutscenes.

As for Mass Effect 1, that's for some reason turned into a slideshow.

Now, I haven't made any significant changes to my hardware in this time, I've got the latest drivers, and I've cleaned up my HD (It's not choked up or anything) and run all the usual maintenance programs.

So I'm just wondering, what's up with this?

Maybe not enough RAM? Or your PC could be overheating.

Na, I don't think it's either of those. :|
The problems don't accumulate over a prolonged gaming session, but over multiple sessions over multiple days, which I think rules out overheating.

And 4GB of RAM seems to be enough to run most stuff with no problems at all, it rarely gets filled even to 50%.

Mmmm.
Well, I actually decided to do something about it; got myself a new 1.5TB HD, just to be sure it's not an issue of space.
Also Formatted my old HD, and reinstalled all the more useful junk.

Now the only risk here is, that get the urge to decapitate myself with a chainsaw if it's all for nothing.
Not that I didn't learn a lot of useful 'things-not-to-do' while formatting a Windows infected HD. *sigh* xP

EDIT:
Yeah, Mass Effect 1 seems to play quite fine now after the formatting.
Just some issues with the sound, so I'm thinking there's prolly some compatibility problems with either the card or the driver. Or not, since I'm using software processing for it for the moment; doesn't matter there's some hacky cuts here and there no matter which I pick.
I'll still have to try the mobo's integrated card, see if it'd work any better...

And only time will tell if there's another load of accumulated errors & glitches just around the corner. o_o
