Cannot get IE Games to Work (Windows 7)

I'm having some very confusing problems, and after days of googling I'm starting to think that I'm the only one experiencing them. Every single Infinity Engine Game that I try to install insists upon acting up in very strange ways. I'll use BGTutu to demonstrate my problems, but similar (if not identical) things show up in Icewind Dale (with HoW & ToL), and Baldur's Gate 2 (with ToB & Patch). The troubles with BG2 are pretty much exactly the same as in Tutu (probably not that surprising). This makes me think that the games have become beset by a common enemy, and since these things started happening after the installation of Windows 7, I am inclined to point my operating system out as the culprit. I may be wrong though. I usually am with these things. I don't think that my video card is solely to blame, at any rate. I say this because when I ran these games on Windows XP, everything worked flawlessly. For some silly reason I decided to upgrade to Windows 7, and that's when the troubles started. I do wish that I was more computer savvy so I didn't have to bother you all. :)

Brief Computer Info:
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6400+ 2.21 GHz
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX

Symptoms Without Widescreen Mod:
Glitching UI, cannot equip offhand weapon/shield without making the game crash.

Symptoms With Widescreen Mod:
Text becomes partially illegible. Game slows down significantly. Offhand weapons/shields work fine.

3D Acceleration has been turned on in all of the examples above. However, turning it off does not help; it simply breaks other things. The famous black boxes show up, and so on. I'm very, very confused. And quite unhappy. These are my favourite games, after all. If anyone has any helpful tips or ideas, I will love you for ever and ever. If this is a common problem, and I have overlooked obvious information here on the forum or elsewhere, then I apologise for posting this. I've searched quite thoroughly, though, so this really is my last hope. Thank you for your time. :)

Oh, goodie. I wasn't logged in. The poster above was me, however. I promise. :)

I cannot believe I didn't think of that. I feel even sillier now than before. I'll do that right now and see if it makes a difference. :D
Oh, and thank you ever so much for the quick response!

Oh, dear lord, that did it. Unbelievable that I didn't think of it myself. It's usually the first thing I do after reformatting my computer. How embarrassing. :crying:
Thank you very, very much for your help, however. I really appreciate it. The games work flawlessly with Widescreen Mod now. Absolutely beautiful. :D

glad i could help, it's not typical that i can, because i don't have quite the knowledge of the workings of the IE games. also, i happen to know from experience, likely because i was a bit too impressed with how easily w7 installed all sorts of drivers.

Four problems, the 3 from the OS, install the game to non-Program Files sub-directory(1), then turn off the User Account Control(Control Panel -> User Accounts and Family Safety -> User Accounts -> Change Your User Account Control settings... set to the bottom most option and done, 2)
And then disable the Program Compatibility Assistant(Start -> type to the console: gpedit.msc and start it, then User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Application Compatibility, 3).
These three needs to be done, so your control of the game and it's files is actual, and not just imaginary.

NVidia card, help can be found here.
Of course the video card drivers upgrade has solved your problem... but if you wish to actually install any other mods, you need to know the above info, too.

BWS - Standard = not imba. Tactical = stupid hard. Expert = broke.
In case the BG2 game crashes, open up the 'baldur.ini' in your game folder, and under the [Program Options] section in the file, make a new line and type in 'Logging On=1' (without the '' quotes, unless the line is already there)... Save the file and exit. Now go back into the game and try to reproduce the crash. Then look in your game folder again for the Baldur.err file and open it with the Notepad to analyze its contents, or let us do it.

Always post the contents of your baldur.err in the case of crashes. I seem to be repeating this like 5 times every time I log on here :P.

i didn't have to do any of that and it still worked out fine.

well, except for installing it in a different directory...which i just happen to do with most my games.

Everything is working flawlessly for me now, actually. But thank you as well, Jarno. :)
All I had to do was update the video card drivers. I'd already done everything else that you mentioned. Can't believe I didn't think of it myself, though.
I suppose that I'll have to go into hiding and not show my face here for a year or so until everyone has forgotten about this. :P
