Did you follow Thunderpeel's guide?
I have the 2cd set and use 800x600 with
40% fonts on my xp with no problems.
I'll post my WeiDU fyi.

I've formally registered for the forums now! Also I've done a little more testing:

-Installation also fails as above at 1024x768.
-I thought it might be because of the Scale of Souls component of the tweak pack. It edits the game engine, which might include changing the exe...but I tried 800x600 after uninstalling everything in the tweak pack and it still fails.
-On a fresh install on my netbook, I did everything as above except I didn't install the Scale of Souls tweak from the tweakpack. It *worked*
-After uninstalling and reinstalling (trying a completely fresh install) on my main computer, and installing everything as above except Scale of Souls...it failed again.

I'm stumped. My install process on this computer and on my netbook were exactly the same. It worked on the netbook and it failed on this computer. I have no idea why. The most recent debug file is attached.

Edit: I FIGURED IT OUT. It's a conflict with AVG anti-virus. Reading the thread below about Sys_error("Torment.exe: Invalid argument") gave me an idea. I ran into something similar with the exe optimizer for Morrowind, where the solution was already known. Here's the instructions I have written down that solve that issue, and this one:

* open AVG 8.0 Free Edition -> Tools -> Advanced settings
* in the left pane select Resident Shield -> Exceptions
* tick the "Use excludes for Resident Shield" option
* use the "Add Path" button to choose the directory to be excluded
* confirm the changes using the OK button

In this case the path to add is the one that torment.exe lies in.

Sorry I didn't read the other thread about AVG first. I figured that was Win7-specific, but apparently it's not

Sorry for the late response, glad to see you've resolved the issue. Yes, it has been reported that AVG can cause such problems. I mention this in the introductory pinned thread here in the forum.

Yep, I see that now. Sorry I missed it. Thanks for the wonderful mod! I'm loving the expanded text area and the fonts and, well, everything really.
