I recently ordered the DVD edition of Icewind Dale collection, which includes Icewind Dale, Heart of Winter, and Icewind Dale II. I already downloaded the patches, plus Trials of the Luremaster (which has the latest IWD1 patch after the standalone patch). Are the patches even necessary? I remember reading somewhere that the Baldur's Gate DVD edition is already fully patched. Maybe Icewind Dale is the same? Also, if the game is fully patched, will Trials of the Luremaster even work? It's not a WeiDU mod, right?

If you are talking about this it needs to be patched. Even the Ultimate Collection has to be patched. I have both of those. Trials of the Luremaster aka Icewind Dale HoW Version 1.42 Patch, is a patch that comes with a free expansion made by the original developers. Its not a mod.

Okay, so I got the set. I just installed IWD and Heart of Winter. I'm guessing I need to install the latest HoW patch instead of the standard IWD one....just like TotSC and ToB fully patch the standard BG1 and BG2 games also. Is this correct?

Actually the "Trials of the Luremaster" is the latest patch to the game(v1.42), so install it... if you have the Heart of Winter expansion, as it's required for the TotLm.

In this order:
IwD
HoW
TotLm.
So there is no need for the other patches as they are included in the latest, just like in the BGII - ToB(so you don't have to install the BGII - SoA patch, because it's included in the ToB).
