So, I'm exploring the Hobgoblin fortress. Each time I think I have it cleared out, I go back to the questgiver, discover that I have apparently 'not explored those ruins yet' and go back to explore them more. Most recently, I tried doing -everything- I could think of within them. Including closing the castle gate.

... .... ... wait for it.

So I go into the depths of the dungeon, having found it. I kill a wraith, I kill a FIRE GIANT ... I get a niiiice staff, and I exit the area.

Through a -one way cavern door-

So apparently the quest is not over, but I cannot go back into the cavern, nor can I get into the castle.

Yeah, I just went through that section maybe a couple hours ago. The one-way cavern door is a bit of a pain, but there shouldn't be any reason why you can't get back into the castle the way you first came in.

There are a few more sections to visit in that cavern, though I've gone through the whole thing and there aren't any adjacent areas, so it's all on that one map.

Protip: If you know what's good for you, stay away from the southeast corner! There's a chest with a good amount of gold and some nice gear, but if you're still on BG1-era levels, your saving throws probably won't be nearly good enough to stand up to the beholder's disintegrate beam. After running like hell and thankfully losing him, I figured the best way is to take Dynaheir (with her fireball spell) and Imoen (with a wand of fire), Invisible them both with everything you can think of, and inch toward either entrance of the little alcove there and drop fireballs into the shaded area. If you're lucky (and I was), the miniature gas drones(?) will drop a Cloudkill right where they're standing, which should hopefully take out the beholder in the same space.

As for what's left, there should be a wizard hiding somewhere in the center of the keep's second floor, behind a series of secret doors. Deal with him and collect the journal he drops. With the wraith and wizard dead, the quest should be complete and you can go back to Pelitar and tell him mission accomplished. There's also a talking statue on the west side of the caverns who'll give you a nice helmet once this is done.

No, you didn't get what he meant. At that point you are completely screwed. I did the same thing, like yesterday, but I had the autosave (or something) from right before I went through that one-way exit. So I was able to recover from that.

After you pull up the drawbridge there is literally no way back inside. To me the fact that there even is a way to block yourself seems off but oh well.

Lol, same thing happened to me, though I did complete the quest prior to exiting the underground. But I was planning to go back in once I've gotten myself a few extra "knock" spells to open 2 chests I couldn't open. They weren't boss chests, though, so hopefully, I didn't miss out on much.

My jaw dropped when I got face to face with it! :woot:

I was about to give up, but before I did, I went through my stuff and found the miracle worker for this situation: Protection from Magic scroll. Mix with one heavy-hitter and enjoy the show!
