so I get into the tomb on the 2 disc version, no mods no patches or anything and I get the first key, but when I go to "die" to get back to the start of the tomb, the game freezes up and locks out and I have to reboot and it won't let me continue from there with a save game

It could have something to do with spell animations, since you get struck by lightning at the tomb. If so, it could be related to the ddraw issues of PST with newer cards. Try to run the game in windowed mod and see if you can get past this. To get to windowed mode open torment.ini and set : Full Screen=0
I can't guarantee you'll be able to achieve windowed mod though. Some graphic cards/drivers cause the game to crash when you try it. You could also try using the D3Dwindower program which can be found here.
