This is my first time playing BTL and I would like to know if I really must take shadow thieves offer to complete Kova's quest?

It appears I'm kind of stuck after getting some evidence in Imnesvale and after searching a bit (because that pinned walkthrough didn't really help) it seems I have to deal with Aran Linvail to meet some Sedai (spelling?) NPC.
I'd love to take the paladin route provided by the Alternatives mod on this playthrough and their readme isn't really clear either. I think I understand I can pay Gaelan to meet Aran and do a few quests with them (maybe up to the point BTL kicks in?) before going to see the paladins? If so do I have to pay another fee? I know I should ask these questions on G3 boards but maybe someone here knows... Else I'll post there as well for an answer.

Enjoying the characters so far but I don't wanna have to part with them because I couldn't complete the quest

Well, BTL was designed for original BG2, with Bodhi and Shadow Thieves.
Paying Gaelan immediately causes you to join the Shadow Thieves.

I'm not familiar with Alternatives, so if you can still take the Paladin route after that, by all means.
You do not get any important clues during the 3 Quests with the Shadow Thieves, so I think that should be fine.

You do however, get (slightly) less Thief pursuit on your back after enlisting with Gaelan / Aran.

Kiyone and Kova are scripted to leave if you join Bodhi, I'm not sure if the Alternatives route would cause those conditions to be met.
