You had me scared there for a minute. :) (Was thinking of my own saves, naturally.)

There is definitely merit in backing up your documents folder, or at least your bioware saves inside that folder, just in case you have a crash or glitch - it is not as bad as the Origin cloud-saves thing in multiplayer, unless of course you use that for your single player game (haven't looked 'cause I don't trust it), but both ME2 and ME3 seem to occasionally "forget" pathing. I have had a ME2 game become corrupted and had to restore from the backup. No big deal in most games, but when you sink as much time into it, it stinks to have to go back to the beginning.

I went through both Mass Effect 1 and 2 a few months ago, doing every single thing as I wanted, and I ended up not being able to use it for Mass Effect 3...and I have no idea why. I had to use the saves from the first time I played, (that I thankfully didn't delete), which were fine.

Thank goodness you can change your class at the beginning of ME3 - no way did I want to play an Infiltrator.
