It is the 3rd time i have been given the task of retrieving the helm of Winterhold for the Jarl. I have to say here that the Jarl should have it twice in his inventory, since i completed the quest both times in the recent past, and yet, he sends me to fetch it again. Does anybody know if this is a bug? I still haven't become a thane in winterhold, if it makes a difference, or joined the college of mages for that matter. I am just visiting the town and finishing up side quests.

Each time i was given the task, it was a different location.

My fantasy story

"Man, in his discussions with other men about questions of religion, statecraft, geography, trade, has always reached a point in the discussion where it has seemed wise to reply to his opponent by disemboweling him or knocking his brains out."

My name is Thomas Hockenberry, Ph.D., and I think the "Ph.D." stands for "Pouring His Draft."

"The study of modern science today is being done by the brain of primitive man."

According the UESPwiki, this quest can become stuck in an infinite loop (see the "Bugs" section). The cause is unknown. Looks like you're stuck with using the console to get it unstuck.

Thanks for the link. :)
Who knows, I think some times bugs are corrected by the game itself after some other event. I am not an imperial or stormcloac, i haven't finished with the good deeds for 3 winterhold residents, i am not affiliated with the mages. Maybe when i will do something of the 3, it will be auto-corrected.
