Helmets clipping on paperdolls

There is a problem affecting the paperdolls of elves and half-elves, where the helmets will clip. It only occurs on the paperdolls, not ingame, and it's not a major problem, but it IS annoying. Is there any easy way to fix this (that does NOT break my installation), or do I have to completely reinstall everything to get rid of whatever is causing this?

Oh, also, I just want to add that I have done some experimentation, and there are much more minor clipping issues on all my inventory sprites, it is just the female elf sprites that are the worst. When I unequip Jaheira's armor, the sprite shifts to the left, (and the weapon is then the thing which clips). When I re-equip armor, the sprite shifts to the right, the weapon returns to the hand, and the helmet stays where it is. Obviously I have tried equipping and unequipping the helmet, to no avail, I have also tested this with other types of helmets, and it happens with them all. I think that the reason this may be happening is the 1PP avatars OR something to do with the avatars in item revisions, but I do not know where to find the original files to place in the override folder. I have tried to use the backup .plt files in the backup folders of 1pp and item revisions, but that alone does not solve it, so perhaps there is some other type of file I should be putting into the override folder along with them, or instead of them.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated, all I really want is to restore the default inventory sprites/paperdolls, if that is at all possible!

Topic moved to the IE help subforum.  Per the guidelines, I don't believe your installation qualifies as a "mega-mod" as you only have BGT installed out of the list (Baldur's Gate Trilogy, The Darkest Day, Shadows Over Soubar, Tortured Souls (BP version), Check the Bodies, and Region of Terror, Never Ending Journey, and The Big Picture).

First of all, open the save game with Shadowkeeper and find what the game Resource reference is for the helm, it's probably the helm01, but it can be different.
Then you just need to --change-log the files, in the above case you would make the --change-log from the "helm01.itm" file. Also as that's not enough, you also need to find the resource reference of the icon used in the equipping of the item, and the simplest way to do that is with NearInfinity, opening the referred item, and using the Edit view to see the "Icon" reference, normally it should be the "ihelm00.bam", and change-log'ging that could give you the participant mods to look for the erroneous culprit. But this all depends on the installed mods.

Note, when you extract the change-log.zip archive and it asks if you wish to overwrite the weidu.exe, answer No ! ...as if you do overwrite, it will lead to a bad change-log printout, that needs to be re-corrected by reverting the action, and updating the weidu.exe again to the latest version.

There's no such a mod, it's a megamod exclusive feature.
Here's a better guideline on the subject... he he he, quoting myself on the third person... whahahahahha:

So what is Megamoding? It's generally accepted idea that Megamoding is taking about combining two or more of big or small game modifications in one install. The original term only included large mods, but nowadays what's large and what's not is not a size question, but of content.
And this evolved a lot, and now we are able to install more than 300 mods into one game, if one want to... but none of those are required to be counted as Megamoding, just a general wish to push the envelope to or more than 10 mods, or two of the big mods.

That was years ago(2009-2010)... so. Yes, it's time sensitive, but far more uptodate than 2007... and yes, the mod amount is about 500 now. But in 2007 it was about a 100 known mods.

Okay, thank you very much for helping me, Imp!

Firstly, I am very familiar with shadowkeeper but not really very familiar at all with nearinfinity anymore (haven't used it in ages...). As a result, I did confirm that the helmet is using helm01.itm, but I cannot remember how to open the item file in NI to see what bam file it uses. I just went with your assumption that it was ihelm00.bam, and ran the changelog with those two files.

So, these are the changelogs that came up, is there anything I can do to fix the problem aside from a complete reinstall? (The fact that I've biffed makes me think no, and I CAN live with the weird helmet icons for one game... but I would prefer not to, of course!)

Oh, and as a final comment (sorry for the double posts, it won't let guests edit posts), this problem does not just occur with one type of helmet. It also occurs with every helmet I have found, including those using other .itm files (such as the Watcher's Helmet, which uses HELM05.itm). I do not know if that makes a difference in our little investigation, but I thought it would be worth mentioning.

So, this must be a problem with the BAM files themselves, (CEFF1INV.BAM etc) if I am understanding correctly, because EVERY helmet has this problem, even those which reference other bam files besides ihelm00.bam. (even the helmet of king strohm III, which uses key20.itm and ikey20.bam!!!)  I believe all I need to know is where can I find the regular BAM files from a clean baldur's gate install, (perhaps I can extract them somehow from a clean install...) OR the regular (not empty, like the 1pp ones,).PLT files from a baldur's gate 2 install... to place in the override folder. Is this at all on the right track, or should I be looking elsewhere? I fired up nearinfinity again, and am reacquainting myself with it rather quickly, but I still am not an expert so if that is involved I will need a quick step-by-step, assuming of course I do not figure it out by myself before anyone responds again :ROFL:

GREAT SUCCESS!!!

I have figured out how to fix this problem, and so in the event anyone else experiences similar issues, I shall now detail how I have fixed the problem!

Firstly, I have my clean install of SOA + TOB, this is probably pretty important (though, if you have the original paperdol.bif (one l, not a typo) in your data folder, this will still work with a modded copy)

Then, you will need DLTC editor or a similar utility which is capable of extracting .bif files. (You can find this at sorceror's place)

Enter DLTC editor, finish the quick setup (this is easy, when using the provided readme file)

Navigate yourself to the data folder, find the paperdol.bif, then extract it using the extraction tool.

The files will be placed in the override folder of the install which you used, so if you used a separate clean install, you will need to then transfer the 415 files it extracts from the clean install's override folder to the mod install's override folder.

Then, you will have the original Baldur's Gate 2 paperdolls in your game (in all their arguable ugliness :P), and your clipping problems should be over with!

I believe this could also be done with the Baldur's Gate 1 files, though I have not tested it myself. Many people prefer the BG1 paperdolls, so that may be a better option for some.

I can only say that this is probably caused by some interaction between IR v3 and 1PP v4.  IR is not officially compatible with 1PP v4 at this time and I don't know what BWP does in order to solve this.

 

If you want help troubleshooting, here's some extra information.

 

There are two graphics in play - the paperdoll images for the creatures and the paperdoll images for the items.  The 1PP paperdolls are based on the BG1 paperdolls and they have heads positioned in different places from the standard BG2 paperdolls.

 

IR includes 1PP v3 paperdolls and some unfinished 1PP v3 shield and helmet graphics.  Everything should look fine if you install IR on its own or with 1PP v2/v3 components (see IR readme for details).

 

1PP v4 includes some of the unfinished shields/helmets but not all of them and it labels them differently.

Do you have any idea where I might find the loose files from 1PP v2 or v3? (or what archive to extract to get them), because if possible I would much prefer to use the new and improved character paperdolls instead of the old ones, while still removing the clipping. My fix was a very sloppy (but effective, sort of) fix, but what you are saying makes me think I may be able to do a less radical change in order to still fix my problem.

 

Also, on a completely unrelated note, I have become quite good at solving these little anti-spam mosaics :P

I found the loose files from v3 of 1pp (realized all I had to do was download the archive and take them from the "files" folder), that fixed my helmet clipping, HOWEVER, there is now one more annoying problem, which is that some weapons clip on the female elves. (all other races and genders seem to be okay). I can work around this, because the 1pp flaming swords do NOT clip, and I can just use that on Jaheira, the only female elf I have with me. HOWEVER, if there is a way to fix this as well, and someone could tell it to me, I would be interested. For now, I shall just use my workarounds, and next game I will reinstall everything, being careful not to use 1pp v4 and Item_rev together, since 1pp v4 does seem to be the source of my problems.

Thank you to Mike and Imp for attempting to help, while I have really done most of the work myself it was your posts that gave me a bit more insight and clues as to how to fix this sort of thing in a way that did not require using original BG2 paperdolls! (which are quite ugly :P)

I have the same problem. Is there a way to fix this using BWS? It would be shame to exclude one of this two great mods.

 

@Jimmy I am bit confused about what you did to fix this. Do I use the method from your previous post on 1pp v3 or I just copy one file from ''files'' folder? Can you please write a little bit detailed info about what you did.

 

Can you also post what weapons clip, and did you managed to fix this?

Okay, I am glad I checked this topic today, hopefully you will still read this or have solved it yourself by now! The way that I fixed the helmet clipping was by downloading this file- http://www.shsforums...s-in-progress/, then extracting the elf female plt and bam files from the archive manually into the override folder. The elf files are the ones that begin with "CEF", with the extra letters corresponding to different types of paperdolls (ceff = elf female fighter, cefc = elf female cleric, and so on.)

When I do this, the weapons will clip, but helmets do not. The way I got around this was by using the flaming sword (an item 1pp had altered, so it was compatible) on jaheira. All bows, quarterstaffs etc. will clip. I have not been able to fix the weapon clipping, despite attempts to override the weapon paperdolls with 1pp ones, such as the "colourable quarterstaves" files. I think that the only option here is to either not install item_rev + 1ppv4 together, OR to use my work-around. If you are using Viconia, Aerie, or a PC female elf (or other mod pc), this workaround may not be very desirable, (though Aerie does not need a helmet fix...) but it is the only one I have found.

 

I hope this helps!

If it does not, you could try the other, more drastic workaround from my previous post, [replacing the paperdolls with original bg2 paperdolls using DLTCEP], but the paperdolls from Baldur's Gate 2 are much more "blocky", and not to some people's tastes.

These are the two examples of what my game currently looks like with one using the non-clipping 1pp flaming sword, and the other with a spear equipped. As you can see, the helmets are now fine, but the weapons do cause issues (with the exception of flaming swords...).

An example of what your game would look like after restoring the original BG2 paperdolls with the DLTCEP process I described can be found in my post from 19 Feb, above.

Thank you for your help. I decided to go with the ''ugly'' BG2 paperdolls, and now I don't have any problems, except that they are realy ugly :)
