I attempted to install BGT, after installing all BG2 mods I desired, as directions indicated, and without modding BG1. Both games were installed fully, via the GOG installer.

That's actually wrongly interpreted the instructions. You should install the BGT-weidu after Tactics, and preferably install also the G3BG2Fixpack(but you don't "have to" have to do it), but before the Sword and Fists and other mods. The reason why it doesn't install is one of the mods damages the alignmnt.2da file badly enough for the BGT-weidu not to be able to adjust to the edit, and so it stops the install. .
Read this line again:
-those modifications that are compatible are assumed to be installed after BGT-WeiDU, unless explicitly stated otherwise (see above and below)
