Started a BWP playthrough with a solo FTM.  Really enjoying, as I have never really used the hide and backstab ability of thieves.  Wow, that's fun.  BUT, I'm seeing a problem.  I am currently level F8/M9/T10.  Thus I should have a x4 backstab multiplier.  I saw x3 for a while and noticed a pattern.  When I level up as a thief my backstab is correct (x3 when I was level 5- 8) but when I subsequently leveled as a mage or fighter, backstab always goes back to x2.  Blah..

Well, previous statements not true entirely.  I was getting 2x multiplier just a while ago but without leveling of any classes, I just started getting 3x multiplier.  Which is better though at level 9, I believe I should be getting 4x...

I will note all backstabs are being done with the same weapon.

Still strange

Anyone know about this, how to fix, or need info from me to investigate?  Thanks!

What kind of weapon... the Item Revision for example lowers the backstab multiplier for a lot of items considered large weapons, while for example the dagger gets an addition +1 if I remember correctly. So ... read the mods you use, the effect they produce and so forth.

Yep, Jarno Mikkola. my Mega Mod FAQ. Use of the BWS, and how to use it(scroll down that post a bit).
OK, desert dweller, welcome to the sanity, you are free to search for the limit, it's out there, we drew it in the sand. Ouh, actually it was still snow then.. but anyways.

The weapon used in all instances is:

Varsconia +2

Standard longsword acquired early in BG1.  And the weird thing is that the multiplier changes on me for no apparent reason.

Imp, you are right as always...

Backstab penalties of -1Backstab Multiplier for long swords.  Thus 3x instead of 4x...

but that still does not completely explain why the changes from 2x to 3x with no apparent reason.. <shrugs>

I think the penalty is based on how easy it would be to quickly pull out the weapon and attack an enemy's weak spot.

Revised Backstabbing

No Penalty: Daggers, Short Swords, Wakizashis, Ninja-Tos, and Clubs
-1 Multiplier: Long Swords, Katanas, Scimitars, and Handaxes
-2 Multiplier: Quarterstaffs

If you install the 'more weapons usable for backstabbing' version, you gain a limited ability to backstab with other types of weapons.

-2 Multiplier: Battleaxes, Bastard Swords, Maces, Morning Stars, and War Hammers
-3 Multiplier: Flails, Halberds, Spears, and Two-Handed Swords

The change is shown in the level up screen, even if it's not real, cause value is updated for a few seconds until another check is made to normalize it.. this is engine related system update mechanism. To give as much info as can be...
It wouldn't be nice to show that when you level up, that you just leveled up... without anything to show for it. Imagine to just see "You leveled up." In the statistic screen... nothing about what happened to your character, no if you had gained a 1 or 1000 hit points, just the above message.

Standard longsword acquired early in BG1.

To be more accurate, this is either in, BG1EE, Tutu, BGT-weidu or some other .. not BG1, alone. :P

@Mike: :cheers:

Yes, that's the current system, my memory was based on a custom table... which needs to not to be remembered.
